ALFALFA YIELDS

alfalfa field near Mcilfonl. On this
excursion lvnndicrs and others will
ha shown the most renmrkublt; i'ortil
izer results ever obtained in America.
Alfalfa fields will be visited where
the untreated portions of the fields
are producing almost nothing, while
the fertilized plots are producing al
least 20 times as much alfalfa as llie
untreated plots.
Can alfalfa he produced success
fully on heavy adobe soil? (Jo on
this alfalfa excursion and see. One
field will he examined where some of
the, finest crops of alfalfa ever pro
duced in the lioae river valley are
growing on very heavy, sticky soil.

in the yield of alfalfa of more than
une thousand per cent.
No one should fail to go " this
trip. Afedford will have an oppor
tunity of seeing one of the best and
most carefully conducted experiments
by any experiment station in America.
Many experts from various parts of
the United States have examined these
fields, and have pronounced these ex
periments unions the most valuable
and most remarkable in this country.
A number of people who have seen
this work have pronounced the re
sults "a miracle."
The Southern Oregon experiment
station has been the pioneer in (he
work with sulphur as u fertilizer on
alfalfa. This work was started six
years njjo when no fertilizers were
being used in southern Oregon. This
experiment station has demonstrated
beyond all doubt that the total yield
of alfalfa in this valley can easily be
doubled, and in some instances in
creased twenty fold, by the proper
use of fertilizers. It has also been
demonstrated that thousands of acres
of adobe soil, which formerly was
regarded of little value for alfalfa,
can be made to produce abundant
crops of alfalfa. The increases on
some of the lighter soils, such as
granite and sandy soils, have in a
number of instances amounted to 200
per cent.
On Tuesday Afternoon.
The trip will start from the Med
ford Commercial club building at 1
o'clock sharp Tuesday afternoon,
May 2!. All those who have automo
biles should bring them, so that ev
erybody may have a chance to ride.
The en(ire trip will not consume more
than two hours.
This is the greatest demon-tntion
that the fanners of this valley have
ever had an opportunity to witness.
Mr. Campbell, the prcat agricultural
expert of the Southeiti Pacific, was
astonished when he saw these exper
iments recently.
A lanre delegation of rancher- nnd
business men from Josephine county
have already made arrangements to
be present. If you have any interest
whatever in belter farming you should
be present at this meeting.

club orcheHtral concert given at the
Presbyterian church lust evening.
Thone who went there expecting to
graciously endure the performance
for the encouragement of some intan
gible muHical uplift Idea received a
distinct jolt. Jt m buIm to say that
nowhere else In the state, outside af
Portland, could a local concert he put
on the boards representing as much
talent and real musicianship as the
one given last evening. On its sheer
merit the house should have been
packed and now that the real adver
tising has gone forth, that is, thru
those who had the temerity to attend.

chestra will no doubt show up a full
quota of music lovers.
The orchestra, under the very able
direction of Mr. Itarry Howell, evi
denced an ensemble of a high order,
and in musical grasp, attack, and gen
eral finesse, showed ability yory much
above the ordinary amateur organiza
tion. Possibly deserving special mention
was the opening number by the or
chestra, the Oriental Suite by Frliul.

Bruult, and Mrs. Isaucs. Miss Hrault's
work astonished and delighted her
audience. This young lady very re
cently sang her initial song for a
Medford audience. Her stage pres
ence Ih charming nnd she has the rare
faculty of taking the audience com
pletely Into her confidence.
The instrumental trio by Miss
French, Mr. and Mrs. Carleton Junes
was rendered with artistic finish and
a scholarly regard for lights and
shades. Miss French Is well known
thru her highly efficient work In
chool music, and her own charming
and lyrical voice It Is not bo well
known, however, that this young
lady '8 versatility includes a fine com
mand of the cello. We are glad that
she is hooked for 'Medford another
year, as she will make possible tho ru
mored organization of string quartet.
IMIhs Huth Warner againgavo evi
dence of being a real comer. Her
rendition of Tosti's !ood-Hye was
very beautiful, rarely so, even for this
chnrming young lyrical soprano.
Sirs. Isaacs sang with her usual
deep color and fine intelligence, a
most beautiful song "Mellnda," by
(Joetz.
Thomas Swem, of New York City,
who is visiting his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. T. M. Swen;, has just complet
ed an enpie;iiuc!tt with the Halboa
Producing company at Lone; Peach,
Calif., as technical director in the
production of the greatest serial ever
presented to the public, starring Kitty
Clifford. Tn the film world the tech
nical director is responsible for nil
stage settings from the simplest to
the most elaborate.
Mr. Svvem is a designer of interior
furnishings and decorating, besides
having had an extended practical ex
perience on the legitimate stuge as
actor and manager.

BE ELKS LADIES NIGHT
Tuesday evening will hereafter be
known aa "toadies night" at the Elks
club. On these occasions the club
will be open to the Elks' ladles who
will enjoy the same privileges In the
club as the men. Special committees
will be appointed from the lodge
membership to have charge of the
club while the ladles are being enter
tained and everything possible will be
done by the Elks to make this innova
tion popular with the lodge's guests.
The ladles will not only have the
use of the mard rooms and club floor
privileges, but will enjoy dancing in'
the lodge room as well, and a ladles
bowling league is to be organized at
once. The club will be open to the
gentlemen as well as the ladies on
this evening and Tuesday night at the
Elks club promises to ue almost as
popular as Thursday evening, the
lodge's regular meeting night.

FRUIT SAYS STEWART
W. IL Stewart, of I,os Angeles,
president of the Stewart Fruit com
pany, a former well known fruit deal
er of the old type, made Medford nnd
the Kojruc river valley a short visit
this week.
This was Mr. Stewart's first visit
to the valley for several years and
he was greatly surprised with, the
development of the fruit industry for
the iast five years, and he found
many "land mark" orchards as well
as a larfie number of old time friends
on his short visit.
He said that the Rogue river valley
was looked upon by the fruit buyer
of the east ns the producer of the
best fruit of the l'aeil'ie coast. He

A rousing good roads meeting was
held at Talent last night, John H.
Carkln presiding. Speakers were V.
H. Gore, Mrs. C. L. Sohleffelln, Mrs.
Jap Andrews, ProC. F. C. Reimer, N.
O. Powers, C. Hbldrldge, J. A. Wes
torlund and Geo. E. Boos.
A committee composed of Prof. F.
C. Iteimer. L. Brown, J. Fuller, H. W.
Frame, C. Iloldridge, N. O. PowerB,
and H. Gleim, was appointed to ad
vertise the coming election to be held
at the Talent achoolhouse.
Much enthusiasm was displayed by
those present, who said they would
personally see to It that a large repre
sentation of Talent voters would be
present at the next meeting and that
the same would be well advertised In
the meantime. Those present express
ed themselves as being heartily In
favor of the good roads masure and
pledged their unstinted support of it.
The good roads speakers are, there
fore, expecting to see a large repre
sentation of Talent people at tbe next
meeting and have promised some well
prepared speeches at that time. All
questions asked by the people will be
fully answered.
