Medford White & Applegate, Agents 132 South Riverside Avenue The Santa Rosa populace Is not yet over tlio many thrills provided tor It last Sunday at one of the most spec tacular dirt track automobile races ever held in northern California. The event, known as the 100-mile Floral Classic, was for a purse of $1000 and was participated in by six contestants before a crowd of more than 6000 people. The winner, A. H. Patterson of Stockton, drove his Hudson Super- Six through a perpetual cloud of sand and dust at steady clip of more than a mile a mlnuto, negotiating the 100 laps of the one-mile flat dirt oval in 90 minutes and 35 seconds. Boldon and Price, both in Dusenbergs, fiiv ished second and third, respectively. In spite of the fact that the Supor- Six maintained a steady and consist ent pace thruout the event rather than any undue outbursts of speed, on account of the rough track, the Hud son took the lead about the middle of the race and held It until the finish It was a case of "loafing" In the lat ter part of the classic. Considering that this speed breaks the record for Santa Rosa's track and that tho Super-Six was pitted against a field of slxteen-valve machines of widely known racing repute, Patter son's victory is truly commendable. Another outstanding feature of the Hudson's splendid showing was the fact that it was not once necessary to lift the hood of the Super-Six or make any adjustment whatever to the mo tor during the entiro race, Patterson making hut a single stop and that on tho DGth lap for a tire change. The tire replacement, which was accom pllshed in 15 seconds, was merely a precautionary measure, for the Super- Six was two laps ahead of its nearest competitor and It meant but the loss of a quarter of a lap. The winning Hudson' finished a lap aiid a half ahead of Bolden In a Dtisenberg, which was second. STORAGE BATTERV "Why must It be pure distilled wa ter?" is a Question often asked by motorists when the necessity for add Ing water to their storage batten ies is brought to their attention. 'Toc' Wright, In charge of the local Prest-O-Llto battery service station, an swers the question In this way: "It Is perfectly natural for battery users to'wonder why clean water of any kind cannot bo used In storage batteries as well ns distilled water. Tho answer Is that water for battery use should he chemically pure as well as free from visiblo impurities. "A storage battery Is made up of scientifically proportioned, chemical elements, combined to produce a cer tain result. The entrance of any for eign chemicals or minerals will seri ously Interfere with the battery's op eration and may permanently affect its usefulness. "City water and well water contain certain chemicals and minerals among them chlorine and Iron. Th use In a storage battery of water con taining these foreign elements (lis turb8 the electro-chemical action of tho battery, resulting in a reduction of the capacity of the plates and some times permanent Injury to them. "Rain water might be used, If caught in the open in jars or crocks. but not If allowed to come In contact with metal or wood such as eave- trotighs, down spouts, buckets, etc. "uoinng the water will not re move chemical Impurities. The com plete removal of chemical and'physl- cal impurities is only accomplished by the distilling process. "Motorists who care for their own batteries should have a supply of dis tilled water for -battery use in glass bottles or earthern vessels never In metal or wooden containers.
