TWO TORPEDOES HIT TRANSPOR RANSYLVAN A HARRY A N IIONKST man's Ihe noblest work of God." Kueh is the e)ihih that must be wrilecn over the tfrave of Senator Harry Lane, for not even his bitterest enemies ever questioned his integrity and sineerity. Fearless and courageous, physically and morally, Harry Lane always fought for the right as it was given him to see it. His sympathy was always for the down-trodden, his efforts in behalf of the underdog. Democratic to a de gree, his loss is t he people's loss'. As mayor of Portland; Harry Lane guided 1 lie town in its transformation into a city. Ho '"closed the town" against the immoral elements that had hitherto dominated its life, banished gambling and suppressed vice. lie fought predatory privilege and safeguarded the rights of the many. As senator during his first session lie exhibited his cus tomary energy and vim but since seemed to lose his grip as ill health marked him for its own. He became more er ratic wit h the progress of disease. His attitude on the war and in opposing the president, created a storm of indigna tion among his constituency which undoubtedly hastened the end, but his sincerity or honesty of purpose was never questioned. Oregon will long remember Harry Lane for his virtues anj forget his frailties. Ef 10 ELECTRIC CHI OSS1ND.VO, N. Y., May 25. nr.
