BRITISH HEADQUARTERS IN FRANCE, April 30. Out of the high thin air whore the fighting blrdmen fly in a Bort of dream-world of ad venture, have come within the last few days still moro wondrous stories of dauntless deeds and feats of aerial tilting to spread the welcome glamor of romance over tho moro sordid side of the war. Above tho British lines and far within the enemy territory, the blue spring skies havo been filled with daring planes that Boem to flash in and out among the hits of floating cloud with the speed of the very sun beams that sparkle, and play upon their silver sides and -all but trans parent wings. Virtually all tho visible machines hear the red, white and bluo mark ings of the allies. It is seldom that hostile machines with the maltose cross upon their spreading wings ven ture across the fighting lines. Germans Avoid Air Fights The British aviators report that it is difficult just now to get German aviators into close fighting. They say that the Germans appear unwil ling to engage in that sort of warfare ! and continually attempt to break off! tho combats. Two fast British machines, far in I the enemy's domain, saw what ap- peared to he a great flock of German ! planes headed toward the British lines. Tho two British airmen climb- ed a couple of thousand feet to havo ; a better look at the strangers. They then saw that it was a formation of j fourteen machines composed of fight-1 ing scouts and hierver two-seaters, probably intent upon a bombing raid. The odds were rather heavy against them, but the British fliers decided to have a go at the hostile airmen. ! For three-quarters of an hour there followed an extraordinary battle. j Two Against Fourteen i Having faster and better maneu- vering machines, the young Britons played about their fourteen enemies i like a pair of giant hornets. They ! dived at them, time and time again, j firing bursts of machine gun bullets j as they passed. With superior speed and climb, the " British machines were able to adopt such tactics as suited their purpose, and from the moment of the first at tack the formation of tho German machines began to break up. After two of their machines had been jet on fire and destroyed and a third sent spinning down to an un doubted fatal crash, the hostile Minadron was completely disorganiz ed; the surviving machines turning about and '-making for home.
