As a street car crowded with passengers passed a German hotel several shots were fired from the building. A number of persons were wounded. This angered the people and there was a renewed outbreak directed against the Germans. The authori ties took measures to restore (iniet. Several Germans were arrested. RIO JANEIRO, April 10. Fire siarted during the attacks on German property in Porto Alegere, which caused large losses, spread to build ings owned by Brazilians. The min ister of war today telegraphed to the commander of the federal troops in the state of Rio Grande Do Sul, in which Porto Alegere is situated, to place at the disposal of the governor all his forces, amounting to about liOO men. An official announcement this af ternoon says the situation in Rio Grande Do Sul is now nearly normal. The loss in the anti-German riots, which resulted in the burning of sev eral German houses today, is estim ated at 20,000,000 milreis. (Before the war a milreis was valued at 55 cents American). Three firemen were wounded but there are no reports of any deaths. The city is now calm and police patrols are, dispersing the crowdB. ' The German newspapers have sus pended publication and the newspa pers report that the Germans resid ing in Parana have withdrawn to Santa Catharina where they are con centrating. Mrs. John ringsdnie of Lake Creek was with us at the same time and went up home on the staire. Floyd Jennings of Medford was out Monday posting tobacco ads for Khun Advertising agency. If I can read the signs correctly, Deputy Assessor G. II. Wamslev is liable to find some of the hidden wealth that some of the taxpayers refuse to give in. so those who re fuse to give in their assessment cor rectly had better he a little careful about what they give in. Mrs. Harvey Stanley was shopping in our town Monday afternoon and visiting jvith her sister, Mrs. Roy Ashpolc, the wife of one of our hard ware merchants. Amos Avers, wife and mother-in-law, Mrs. J. II. Trusty of F.Ik creek, were among the guests' here Monday evening for supper and visited until bed time. W. O. Wheeler, the principal, and his wife, who has charge of the prim ary department, are tuking their evening meals at the Sunnyside. He informs me that they are engaged to teach as principal nnd primary teachers in the Talent school, where they taught together for fonr years, and Mrs. Wheeler taught one yenr before they taught together, nnd now to be cnllcd back to the old stand speaks well for them as instructors. Mrs. Ida Magcrle of Rogue River has been up here visiting her sister, Mrs. Frank Lewis, and her mother, Mrs. Isnbelle Heckathorn. Messrs. S. S. Bullis and Fred Cummings came out on the P. & E. Tuesday on their way to the big tim ber. Mr. Bullis was going up to ar range to bring out a large donkey en gine he had purchased of Edgar Ha ter. He says that he is going to draw in logs for his mill near Medford. Lucius Kingcaid of Pros pect, the mighty panther hunter, was also on the train, beside ten others, all strangers. The same train brought out a lot of bay for George Austin, the mail conjractor, between here and Climax; Mrs. F. T. New port, wife of the Medford depot agent for the P. & E., and her daugh ter, Lucille. There was also a large lot of miscellaneous goods came out for our merchants. Mrs. Irving Daley and her daugh ter, Miss Venita, came out on the Lake Creek stage, took dinner nt the Sunnyside and went on to Medford on the train. Alex. Vestal, Henry French, Perry Foster, F. J. Ayres and wife, Mr. Weaver of Butte Falls, (). Adams of Hutte Falls, Curl von dcr Ilcllcn and wife were doing business ill town on Tuesday. Mr. Edinglon, superintendent on the Corbin orchard for Henry Von Ilocvenbiirg, who has it leased, was hauling hay through town from the Walsh farm, on Ante!uie creek. While Mrs. Holt is away in Oakland, Cal., the doctor takes most of his meals with Mother Howlett. P. F. Anderson, deputy sheriff, and wife called for late dinner Wed nesday on their why to the Deben- ger Gap section. When told of the condition of the roads he hesitated quite a while about undertaking th trip with a cur, but finally decided to make the venture. We have had no rain for nearly two days, and the farmers are cor respondingly hapoy. Since my last report, Mrs. Rosetta Potter has renewed her subscription to the Daily Mail Tribune. While working on the bridge which is being built across Evans creel; last Monday, John Bahr fell from a guy rope, striking his head and ren dering him unconscious. Dr. Bris coe was called and the injured man wns taken to Sacred Heart hospital. Medford, for treatment. His skull was trepanned by Dr. R. J. Conroy nnd his prospect for recovery seem ed hopeful for a time. A turn for the worse same the last of the week and his wife was hastily summoned to his bedside, nnd was there at the time of his death. Mrs. James Martin returned Tues day evening from a three months' visit nt San Jose, Cal. Mrs. Martin was much benefited by her stay in a milder climate. Mrs. Thomas Mar tin nnd two children came home with Mrs. Marliri for an extended visit here. Rev. John W. Hoyt of Gold Bench, Or., preached nt the Presbvterinn church Sundny morning and evening. The Schoolmasters' club of Jack son and Josephine counties held the last meeting of the year in the high school room Saturday; State Su perintendent J. A. Churchill nnd Pro fessor C. C. Mnxey of 0. A. C. were present nnd talked to the members. The Pnrent-Tcnehers' association of Rogue River served luncheon to the visitors in the bunqnet room of the Odd Fellows' building. After lunch eon the school mn visited the lib rary maintained by the Lndies' Im provement club nnd were received bv the librarier, Mrs. E. Fowler, and her loyal assistant, Mrs. W. P. Wetberell. The visiting school men expressed hearty appreciation of the luncheon served by the Indies and were of the opinion that their club meeting at the school house had be6n a very I'ooH one. ' Mrs. Roy G. Smith nnd Mrs. J. P. Wells of Jacksonville accompanied Mr. Wells Saturday on his visit to Rogue River nnd spent the day with Miss Mary Hurst. They culled upon Mrs. George Martin also while here. Little Gordon Hatch is quite sick. Mr. and Mrs. Blnlock and children were Sunday guests of Mr. nnd Mrs. J. B. Hair. TALENT TALK Charles Tryer left Snturduy morn ing for Montague, where he is cm ployed as cashier for the Southern Pacific company. Mr. Summers was a town culler from Wagner creek Tuesday morn ing. - The I'tah-ldaho Sugar company is to establish a loading station at Tal ent. This will be of great advantage to the fanners of this vicinity. The Southern Oregon field meet will be held here ut Talent. Teams from Rogue River, Gold Hill, Central Point and Jacksonville will compete with the Talent team in the big tour nament. Mrs. J. T. Sawyer was shopping from Wugner ?reek Tuesday after noon. Died Monday morning, of hemor rhage of Ihe brain nt the Sacred Heart hospital in Medford, II. B, Bahr of Evans Creek. Demise was caused by a fall while working with A. K. Eurhart's road gang Tuesday, his head being badly injured by a falling Kile. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where every effort was milde to save him. An oerution was performed Wednesday, four mserls being made through Hie skull, where it was discovered that three arleries were broken after they were tied. He did not rally. Dr. Hriscoe of Rogue River atlended bolb operation nnd post mortem, which was held Sunday. The body was sent to Iowa for burial. Deceased leaves n wife and three children. Mr. Pendleton of Table Rock was doing business iu Antioeh Monday. Mr. Wyland and Dave Cottreli of the Meadows were gathering their cattle on the upper Table Rock last week.
