I'Voiti liftcen hundred to two Ihous and, inehiding the high school stu tlents and pupils from the other schools, crowded around the Pullman car lo greet the youthful future avia tors, as the high school hand played palmitic, airs. 1 lie crowd was nsely packed between the denot building and the train that it was almost impossible for ono to move. the aviators leaned out the car windows and exchanged greetings with lriemls nnd relatives in the crowd, and reached down and shook hands with those who crowded in against the car. Several of the boys jumped out llio car windows and tried to mix with the assemblage, but quickly gave it up. Mothers, sweet -Hicurls nnd rela tives, with tears ill their eves, found it impossible to get close to their loved ones for personal conversation. In fact, many had lo pass their pack ages of lunch, goodies and candy over the heads of the crowd lo the ca'r. A number of yearning parents wauled lo drive their sons to Ash land in automobiles, hoping thereby ii. have a little visit, but the officer in command of the aviation siuad re fused permission for the boys lo leave Ihe train. Some relatives purchased tickets to Ashhind, nnl managed to get aboard the train, hoping to get into Ihe aviation car and obtain (he longed for visit. Still other relatives drove on to Ashland. Just as the train started to pull out, Mutt Williamson, high school basket ball slur, leaning away oul of his car window, shouted : "Now, let's nil spell Mclford high!" Al once the high school body complied. Ihe soldiers, nearly all former high school students, joining in. liy tho time Ihe yell was finished the trnin wiis speeding southward, and the bi impromptu demonstration was over. In all. U4 young men from Mcd l'ord and vicinity enlisted in the avia tion corps, but not all were on the train Tuesday, as spvi-nl of the boys are ill at the Vancouver barracks, si ill suffering from their typhoid and small pox inoculation. (Juite a num ber of the new air soldiers were oil her Ibis year's graduating class ot llm high school, or were graduates, hence Ihe keen interest of the high school hory in greeting the soldiers Tuesday. The school, headed by its baud, marched to the depot in a body. A conspicuous feature of the de pot demonstration was the eompli inentary attendance of Company I, O. X. (I., Wooilbum, Ore., whose members were drawn up at atten tion at one side of the crowd. A mcetlni; called tiv Mayor tiatcs to Like steps toward organizing n home Biiaid for Medford and vicinity will l held Tuesday evening at 7:30 at the huh school assembly hall. There Is also a lively exchange of souvenirs. E E Kulislincnls in Ihe 7th company (oust .Artillery corps have now reach ed 10K men, being the maximum num ber for n peace strength company Orders have been received however to continue to take enlistments and hold the papers pending action bv eon gress on the army bills now before it for action. It is expected that au thority will be given to enlist all mil ilia organi.ations to full war strength of 50 men. It is not expected (hat any further units of the National Guard will be mobili.ed until congress hns definite ly defined the method by which the new army of two million men will he raised. This will take probably two weeks or more, during which time re cruiting will continue up to the time mohiliation is ordered. Anyone contemplating enlisting in le 7th company should do so ut once as the full number allowed is now practically secured and to delay longer might result in being trnns- Icrrcd to some other arm of tho service not so desirable lis the coast artillery. Many old members who hnye moved to other localities have wired or written to hold places for lliem in the company and they would report at once when called upon. I here is now no doubt whatever that the company will leave with 150 men ill the ranks. Kvcry position is now filled with experienced men, except -the position of cooks, of which two or more are needed. One of the former cooks has moved to Eugene and transferred lo in '2nd Company of the Coast Artil lery corps nnd the other has trans ferred lo the regular army. The 7lh Company is therefore greatly in need of two cooks who have had exper ience in large camps such as railroad construction camps or in large res taurants. Enlistments as cooks will bo doubly welcomed by the company. Enlistment of Iwo experienced cooks in the 7th company is greatly desired, announces Captain Vance. Holh conks formerly with the com pany have been transferred to other organizations after moving from Mcdl'ord, and unless some cooks can be secured the company will have lo live on hard tack, canned beans and embalmed beef until some member of the company can learn how to cook. The burning itucstion, therefore, just now in Ihe ranks id' the 7llt company is a supply of nnuy cooks, of which two or inure are wanted ill once. i i -:.
