MEDFORD MATXi TRTBUNT3 MEDFOKD, OREO ON". TiniRRDAY, "AP'RTTj- !, 1917. PAGE FIVEr X' BLUE LEDGE ORE BY V. W. V-'ATSON. "Ono big success lu the Medford mining nrea will set the whole field agog," said Fred W. Kelly, now an Alaskan miner, but who worked In the Blue Ledge district tour or five years, beginning in 107. "That is the sumniuni boniim the tlrst big. blast that will open the en tire district with one shot," continu ed Mr. Kolly. "The Bame thing is true of almost all mining districts. A settled condition of development will come only when capital shall have been commanded In sufficient sum to carry ono big strike to suc cess. "There Is not a mine in the world with such vast quantity of ore block ed out, as that at the Blue Ledge that is not being operated on a large scale t'bdrf. Outsido of Kennicott, Alaska, there Is not a mine in the world with so much development work done as that of the Blue Led go without a enielter. J Money Must lie Used 'The Goldfield and Tonopah suc cesses attracted millions of dollars for development Into those regions of Nevada; and that development took out mniry moro millions than were required to obtain them. And yet, there is more money squandered in one county in Nevada in a month in the mining business than In all Ore gon in a year. Notwithstanding the number of failures among the suc cesses, a man could dispose of a good prospect in that region more quickly at any time that a tiptop property here now. It requires money to get money out of mines. Mining on a large scale is a stupendous business. Not one prospector in ten thousand has it, nor has he the business con nections that will enable him to got it. i.N'o employment is more narrowly limited than that of the prospector. Ho knows nothing of the commercial phases of business; but it takes a practical prospector to find the loca tion of the mines." Capital All That's Needed. Mr. Kelly, who is a brother to E. E.' Kelly of this city, came down from Alaska a few weeks ago, accompani ed by Mrs. Kelly, for a brief visit, in tending to return next month to his placer properties In that country hack of Cordova, which ho bus been work working successfully for nearly two years. Ilo mined successfully in No vHdn for five years. Ills explanation in Vjio southern Oregon and northern California districts, for which Med. ford fv the logical business center, convinced him that it is a field of vast mlnVral wealth, but on to which capital wiYl ho slow to come because very promrvient properties have Iain dormnnt 8olong as a consequence of faulty management or flnoncial embarrassment1 "I hn,vo firm Yonfldenee in the ul tlmate outcome oK the mining nnera- ..'.thn's here," said Mir. Kelly. "Should ' tlTc Bluo Ledge mine bo taken over Jhy real men, there is. no doubt that It will be operated on a largo scale. It Is too great a property to lay idle. I Not tho Mine's ("suit. , S "It Is not the fault of Ihi) mine that ; 1,1 lies idle. It has been dtMiiotistrat- to bo a succession or Imtncliso ore . bodies of unusually rich ores. 'Those who havu owned tho initio for many Hp-ears hnvo prlvnto reasons for : not J operating it. And that Isn't an:'of I our business. With its extensive one- ration, however, will come tho open ing of one of the most attractive min ing regions on the coast. Tho tide of development will carry with it the operation of scores of mines in that u?t plant til lape a row at a Time just plant trie J RECRUITS FLOCK TO I Now that Hie certainly of active service hv (he ('oust Artillery Corps is nppurent, recruits arc flocking; to the colors of the Tth company, mid lust niejit at the regular weekly driii there were almost as many men lined up in the "rooky" squad us in the "rejrulurs." A tidal of about twenty men have now been enrolled within the past week and many others have signified their intention of eniistin' just as soon as win- is nctnally de clared. Now that it is known that every vonm; m.in of military age is to In drafted into the federal service ut once upon the dcluration of war, it behooves every one to protect his good name and reputation hv.at once enlisting: in some arm of the ser vice and not let il he handed down to his posterity that lie was not a slacker only because the government impelled him to serve his country in its peril. The youujr niun who holds hack until he is conscripted may find himself in a branch of tlie service not to Ins liking-. The Const Artillery Corps holds out the most chances for advancement of nny other ami of the service. The troops nrc stationed in barracks, with mod ern conveniences and sanitary sur roundings, and if any fiirhtinjr is done by the American troops it will bo by the navy and coast fortifications. Under the circumstances the Const 'Artillery Corps should have such num bers of applications for enlistment that the various companies could not accept them. Each company is to be recruited up to 1"0 men at once and this number should be secured in Medford before tho end of the week. A list of over two hundred names has been prepared by officers of the 7th company of eligible young men in this community, who are not re- sponiliiHr to their country's eall and when the tune for action comes the names of these men will be turned over to tho agents of (ho .govern ment for conscription' into "the ser vice. READY FOR AIM COLONEL, April 5 The Panama canal terminal ports of Cristobul and liilboa will be closed to navigation between sunset and sunrise and lights will be extinguished beginning to morrow. Shipping is warned that it is unsafe to approach nearer than two miles from the ports by day or night. ' vicinity which there is reason to be lieve are just as large and quite as rich In high-grade oie at tho Blue Ledge. "The copper mines at Kennicott. Alaska, yield 70-percent copper. They ship the oro to the Taronia smelter. Other great copper regions up there aro those of Prinse William Sound, Montague Island and Knights Islantl. but they will not compare in ore val ues with the nine Ledge. All mining engineers agree that the Mine ledge district Is a great copper field." Make a More Beautiful Garden With 4 FOR BETTER GARDENS Seeds are properly spared in thin tissue paper tape.
