lEDFOTtD MATTi TTUTiUNE MTinEOTlT). ORECIOX, TUESDAY. 'APKTL P. 1017. PAGE T-TVR A FOR CRATER LAKE C. K. Gates and II. L. Walthers have returned from I'orllaml, where, ns a committee representing the Med ford Commerciul club they spent two days working to secure stale unci fed eral aid f'"r 'ho Crater Lake highway, under tlic terms of the Shackelford and lican bills. They secured the en dorscincnt of the Portland Cliamhe C Connnerce at a luncheon Friday. 'flic chamber adopted resolutions fa wring the highway. They then sue cceded in securing an endorsement of the project from S. lienson, chair man of the state highway commis sion. Chief Forester J I. K. Graves of the forestry bureau, who had been antagonistic to the project, was won over, and promised to give the sub ject earnest consideration. Highway Commissioner K. J. Adams was next vjlcd at Kugene, and went on record ailavoring the highway. Passing Hie Ruck. The highway commission has been passing the buio!; to the forestry sor l lice, which had passed it back again, rfiul between the two, there was every probability that the five years co operative road work between state anil federal governments would en tirely ignore Crater Lake highway, and that not u penny would be spent upon it. As u result of the efforts of .Messrs Gates and Walthers, the state highway commission lias recom mended it, and if the highway docs not receive consideration, it will not be the slate commission's fault. The portion of the highway sought for immediate improvement is that between Prospect and the. park lines, 22 miles, estimated to cost .$10(1,0(10. Concerning the subject, the Portland Oregoman says: "Plans to make Crater Lake Na tional Park easily accessible to nu tomobilists are being put before members of the highway commission and officials of the forest service by Mayor C K. Gates and IT. L. Wal ' ther, of Medford, who arrived in the city ycstcnhiy in the interests of the pxojcft. Work Would Cost .$100,000. "The suggestion of Medford civic and commercial organizations for the improvement of the 22-mile strip, as explained yesterday, is that the state highway commission and the forest service divide the expense. The cost of '""putting the road into condition equaling that of the remaining stretches, as estimated, would be $100,000. "The reception of the plan by- of ficials here has been favorable. S. Benson, chairman of the highway commission, meeting with Mayor Gales and JIV. Wallher at the lunch eon of the chamber of commerce gov erning board yesterday, promised bis support for the project and other members of the commission are re ported to be inclined in the same di rection. The chamber of commerce governors were enthusiastic in their Approval of the plan. .Mr. Knives to Outsider Plan. "The necessary government appro priation for its half of the. expense lias not yet been obtained, allhongh Henry S. Graves, chief forester, with whom a conference was held yestcr dav, promised that the matter would receive attention as soon as possible." Messrs Gates and Walthers were given a vote of thanks fur their ef forts by the road committee of tin dub for had they not made the tri and used the utmost tact, the pros pect of improvement of the Crater Lake highway would have gone glim nicring. JCAKKZ, Mexico, April .1. Sixty (k e Villa followers were executed in the Chihuahua City cemetery yester day by order of General Francisco Murgiiin, refugees arriving from tin slate capital todav said. The Globe says: iieniian statesmen have scorn fully affected to regard the entrain' of the 1'niied Stales as negligible W 'an snlelv leave them to find "lit ''air mi-take, in the meantime w are content to stand si bier t shoulder with the land of the free in Hie greatest battle for freedom the world has ever seen.'' In a long editorial the F.veuing Standard says: "The German government 1ms done a very mad thin..' in iWcing the Cnit cd States into the ranks of its ene mies." ( rges that until yester day Gcraiany could have obtained peace by abandoning submarine war fare, inasmuch iis "the strong paci fist element in the Tinted States would have overruled the wiser party which recognizes Prussia as the enemy of mankind, who must he dis abled if the world is to en joy pence." The Standard then says that Ger many is bringing the crushing ma terial and moral force of the g.eat republic against her. was acting on only' two possible theories: First, that Germany contemplates a sur render and that her pride demands that she surrender only to the whole world; second, that it means a des perate staking of all on the chance of starving F.ughiud by her submarine campaign.
