FRENCH FRONT- IX FRANCK, FRANCE, March 23. (From a surf correspondent of the Associated Press.) Destruction and desolation are salient features along the track of the German retreat between the im portant towns of Roye and Ham and beyond. Tho correspondent has ac companied the French army In tho advance over an area which since the licginulng of the Gorman retrograde movement has reached a total of ap proximately 950 sn.iir.ro miles. Fol lowing closely on tho heels of the re tiring Germans the correspondent passed through many villages whose ashes were still Hiuoulderlng, all hav ing been fired by Gorman troops be longing to the seventeenth army corps. Road Junction rosn'iycl. Large towns such as Roye, Ncslc i.nd Jlam suffered less than tho vil lagos. All road junctions were mined and blown up, leaving gaping chaxms largo enough to contain a six-story house. Although In many towns the houses outwardly are Intact, giving almost an unchanged aspect, they proved on Inspection to bo merely skeletons whoso contents had been ruthlessly deslroyed with picks and shovels. In the country districts the devastation everywhere Is most com plete, both Inside and out. Old peas ants with the women and children who for some time had been gather ed 'by the Germans lu tho largo cen ters, attempted today, after being lib erated by tho French and British, to find tracos of their former homos. They discovered nothing but heaps of dobrls. Their agricultural Imple ments and machinery had been brok en, all fruit trees sawed through close to tho ground and grain and grass seed trampled. This destruc tion added to the previous confisca tion of all domestic anlmalB and poul try In the occupied French provinces during the list thirty months caused many to glv way to despair but jo over the roturn of the French event ually dominated all other feelings, ltcfugcm Homeless. For the present most of tho refu gee.eft homeless by tho Germans in the ro-occupled region are subsisting on what remains In their possession of tho last American relief consign ment while awaiting organization of a French commissariat. In Hani, one of tho most advanced and Important towns ro-taken, tho correspondent was tho first stranger to arrive after tho French troops entered. Tho In habitants, many of whom wero still there, Invariably assorted they had had no meat or milk for eighteen months and that whenever they rais ed chickens or rnbliits for their own consumption they wero taken by the Goi mans, who paid for them In bonds instead of money, Tho town's greatest featuro. the famous tower In which Napoleon Hi was Incarcerated within walls forty feet thick, was blown to fragment be fore tho Germans depnrted. All Ger man Bllvcr money was taken awav and replarcd by paper. The Inhabit ants state that fifty young women and girls were deported, ostensibly to work for the Germans at Maubeuge. Village Are DcmtIh. Slmllnr conditions prevail In other towns. Tho villages are mere des erts. The Inhabitants say the Ger mans before leaving declared they would lay to waste the whole coun try so as not to permit the advancing allied troops to obtain any benefit from It. French soldiers returning from reronnnlsvanccs affirm this program has been fully carried out. not a rottage, treo or bush being left whole. Whero the retreat will stop appears to lie unknown even to German pris onera who mnko widely varying statements. All, however, agree that Field Marshal Von HlmlcuhurR is tho leader of the wholo Gorman nilltan policy. Their respect for his name Is shown by the fact that even aftei they are taken prisoner they stall, I at attention whenever he Is mentioned. irA It ,V '' v a -St ft. 5 f n 7 - 4 '-".Vi-L k -t I M ri ft"' n"K-"Aafv'.!r:r'f'r'r' ft t 5. - Ti. Pioneer's Journey to Coast A short sketch of Hie pioneer jour ney to California of Mrs. Urania Clieesman, who died March 18, 11117, at Medl'ori!, Oregon. Urania, daughter of Ohed and I.u cindii I'olk Macy, was born in Knox county, Iinliana, on April "ith, 1H2H, and was married to David W. Chccs man, October 17th, 184!). On April 7th, 18.")0, they joined her parents in the long- and perilous journey by ox team to California, buying- their last supplies nt Kansas City, a frontier village of about "lllll leople. The Indian village of Wyan dotte was at the junction of the K:uv and I lie Missouri rivers. These were peaceable Indians and wore slcigli hells on their buckskin lejrgins. The Pawnee Indians wero rcspre scntcd to us as hostile, but we hud no trouble with them, nor with any oilier liibcs. Our Irain was stricken by the cholera mid several families lost members. Among those who died on June 1 Ith, was Charles l'olk Macy, a yotingvr lirnlher of Mrs. Clicesmun. At Salt Iviike t'itv a son was lioni to Mr. and Mrs. Clieesmnn. Leaving Sail l.nke Ciy October 8th, we jour neyed on, finally seeing the now well known mountain peaks of southern California, namely, San llernardino, (Iraybaek, Strawberry peak, Mount Wilson, and San Antonio, lovim: call ed "Old Halily," ami many others of lesser size. Arriving at the Mojiive river, we knew we were in California. One day's travel brought us to the eu-t oi:d of the Cnjon pass, through which the Santa Fe railroad now enters the valley of San Hernardino. Christmas Day, 18."0 we journeyed in great peril, for the road reseended the ridge of the Cnjon mountain, many places being so narrow that tlie drivers of the oxen would have to climb on the "hounds of the wagon tongue," not having room to walk on the side. This part was called "The Devil's Haekbone."' The famous Kanehos, Cueanionga, Sim Jose, l',l l'ncnle, 11ml others were passed. In due lime we came to llic mission Sun Gabriel, where Mr. anil Mrs. Checiinan left us, to take the steamer at the harbor o'f San Pedro fur the port of Sun Francisco. Their subsequent, journeys led tlirm to many parts of California und Orcion where they were always ac tive in the political life. Mr. dices man represented Lake county, Ore gon, in the assembly tw'o terms, be ginning 1S74. Mrs. Clieesman was a typical pio neer woman, beius; "a neighbor's friend, v. henever needed."
