NATION'S SAFETY REQUIRES STONE OFF COMMITTEE As Chairman of Foreign Relations Committee, Missouri Senator is a Profound National Calamity Ignorant, Without Vision and Defi cient In Patriotism. By CHAIU.KS EDWARD RUSSELL WASHINGTON, March 21. Everything now for t!: national de fense wo must huve it. No man can sny what may came . of tho situation that has been forced upon this country. Any moment we ma be brought face to face with the most tremendous crisis in our his tory. Get ready for events that may test all the nation's nerve and all its re sources they are easily possible , This is but tho plainest of com mon senscj. It is self-evident duly. K nesds 119 argument. New Clmirmun Needed. And tho first thing necessary to put us in to a reasonable state of defense and security is to get another chmrninii for the senate committee on foreign relations. This is imperative. The foreign relations committee is now the most important in congress. Tho course we shall steer in the troublous, doubt ful days at hand and (he outcome lor tins country dccnd largely upon that committee. The present chairman is Senator William J. Stone of Missouri. There arc the gravest reasons of nahonal welfare why Senator Stone should not cotinuc to hold that posi tion. Some of them need not be dwelt upon here. In the present crisis it is enough to know that the following tilings are true of him : Ho has 110 sympathy with the pol icy, course or faith of the adminis tration; At n time of great perplexity and ganger he led on the floor of the sen ate a fight against the only possible plan to uphold (he nation;)! honor in foreign affairs. Out or Sympathy. IIo announced in the senate that he was so far out of syimmthv-with jt ' n project to defend American lives " ubrond lli.il I... 1 1 i.. .... , " ailuunllUU-d IO NIC vica chainnan the duty of managing such a measure that his own com lnitteo had reported. He attempted to add to the Lodge resolution of inquiry concerning the Ziininennann note a question that under the conditions was insulting and hostile to the nation. Ho has not failed ni any critical time since our present complications began to take an attitude that can only be construed as sympathetic with Germany; bo has never said anything to show that he was ready " to cast his lot with the country of bis birth. He was involved in tho accepted Version of the celebrated intrigues of Sunday, February (, the day after von riei-istorlf's dismissal; accord ing to that, version he was in consul tation with those that were trying to nullify tho effect of the president's action in sending von liernsturff home. Densely Ignorant. Ho was the man generally believed to be aimed at when on the next day Negator lirandcgee rose solemnly in the senate and rend the statute thai makes all taking part in that cont'er l ence liable to prosecution for trcn j son. There are still other things to con sider. Senator Slnno has 110 acquain tance with foreign affairs, lie has only the rudimentary acquaintance with foreign countries, lie does not know what (icrnuiny means to the jvorld. lie has no conception of the titanic conflict between ideas that is the base and substance of the Euro lican war. Stone b;m not a suspicion of facts and issues involved. lie the has never relleelod that the triumph of tieirnany would bo the triumph around the world of the aulocrulie theory of government, the triumph of (iennunv's foes would be the tri umph of the democratic theory of government, lie does not know that the struggle between ihese ci ntro lug ideas has been going on in Ku rope fur eenturit'S nnd inrpssnnlly. whether the existing condition has been called war or nciiee. He docs no! even know that in this struggle the United Stales bus vital concern. Without Vision. If he knows anything about his tory he has never once revealed it in the senate. If he hns any acquain tance with the philosophy of human development he has carefully hidden it. If be has any vision about man- HUSBAND GIVES UP WIFE TO HIS BROTHER SO SHE MAY BE HAPPY mzfAm fa wi&tt a B W JO'S. ' ' The incoming of the new congress gives us a chance to lose this incon gruous figure while the losing is good. The committees should bo read justed and another place found lor the activities of Senator Stone, if he has any. There is a vacancy on the com mittee on the Potomac finis. I fancy that, would be found to answer ad mirably. Anyway, give him ' some place where he cannot malignantly block the president's path, give comfort to the enemies of his mil ion, present to the world the world the spcctnelu of wrangling nnd disloval councils, and run the nsk of involving us in ruin.
