HY CHARLES EDWARD RUSSELL. 3 WASHINGTON. Jlureh 1!). The .'.jcvil men do lives after them, nnd the ;-fevil done to this country by Count ;:; Joliunnes von Iiernstorff threatens Jlong to outlive the memory of his -iuime. $ The reason the president has hesi tated to aet in the crisis the Zinimcr 'man note brought is because lie did uiiot have the united country behind .ihim, and the reason he didn't have 'jllmt is chiefly because of the onn mmg work of the (lertniin press ngcn (fev, conducted by Hint boss schemer, .Itvon licnistorff. . V- y Dozen Benedict Arnolds. -4 When I lie 12 Benedict Arnolds of 'grille senate managed to beat him about Tanned neutrality the natural hope was !? ithat they talked no disloyally but heir own. The legislatures of the,. 50 14; pigs and skips $12.25 r; middle western states have knocked !, ; that hope galley west. 'J The ugly fact to give us all a jolt 1 is that the '2 must have spoken a . feeling common in the regions they v 1 come from. j . How does it happen that at this j! supremo crisis in our history so many I Americans of the middle west are at t. .', odds with the rest about such a mat- tor? ' I m a middle westerner myself. 'Nobody can put it over on me that my port of the country is any less Ameri- can than any other, or any readier to have the flag in the mud. Even nf jj tor all these legislatures have testi fy fled to the contrary, I'm not jarred ' but of that faith.. ' !v Ouo It to llomstorff. ' We owe all this trouble to the wun Ih 1 dcrful llernslorlT press agency. The f; ; ndroit mind that steered that concern i picked put the middle west as its best I , hold because the middle west hud so , many cities with large German popu- ; lations, and it made each of those M cities a center from which to tell lies and spread dope, f Kvery day and night there went ; out of the German embassy in this ; 1 city a flood of press mutter ingen f' loiisly designed by u mind that knew : I the Aincrican mental processes as , well as it knew its own. It was put up in a way to be cer ."I tain of getting into the American press "good stories" from the news ".i point tf view, that scarcely an editor . t ever would suspect, r If it was the massacres In Belgium, 1 this amazing genius knew how to j eover them with such a web of doubl w mat toilay- tour out of live Americans ' hai" 110 certainty there ever were any '. hiuh things. .. ( J War Cpsido Down. If it was the violation of Belgium's treaty rights, he scattered alleged documents to show that England was about to do the same thing. For this reason nnd this alone, ninny Americans have the whole war upside down. ery often they do not know or ileff will not consider the simplest facts about it. They do not know, or will not think, that Germany plan- hod it yeurs in advance; that the row .--jt with Serbia was only n pretense: i J that Germnny was so bent upon it she " twice rejected the arbitration that f would have avoided it; that she really S declared it in April, l'JKI, nnd not in j August, 1914; that she alone is re " sponsible for blood drenched and ruined Eurue. They will not consider that from the begiuuiui; Germany has ulusdily treated this country with intolerable contempt and deliberate attacks; tiiat she never had the slightest righ! to sink one American ship: I lint every shot she has fired at mi -it a ship lin been n separate net of war: '.hat when her agents blew up Aaicricnn facto ries they were waging war jus! as much as if (Ionium I roups had for mally invaded us. Hypnotized by Envoy, They will not even consider tho so bering fact that if Germany should win in Ibis war her plans call for a new triple alliani-e In divide the world; that her share is to include the rich field of South America, and thut means we shall fight her then if we don't fight her now. They hnvd been hypnotized by the von licnistorff stuff about Germany fighting for the Fatherland, the fairy tales about Russia and the carefully manufactured stuff about British in terference with the "freedom of the seas." That is why the president fails of tho support he ought to have, and we stand fiddling and fooling when we ought to be at the great task of free ing the world and setting forward the march of progress nnd democracy. The defense in the so-called whiskey graft trial in the United States dis trict court today did not begin to introduce evidence today in defense of Mayor Gill as expected, but put on the stand the driver of the truekloud of whiskey seized by the police in the Star Carriage works on the day Ered Billingsley testified he bribed Chief of Police Beckiugham with f'lillll, and then called ns a witness James Doom, a city detective, one of the defendants. It is understood that the remainder of the day will be given over to the testimony of the four detectives on trial and witnesses in their behalf. E. Tierney, who drove the rruek load of Margctl whiskey to the car riage works September lillti, swore that after the seizure of Chief of Police Bockinuham ordered him lo drive the truck to police hcndcpinr. tors, where, in the presenee of Mayor Gill, the chief ordered the whiskey destroyed. Witness testified that the bottles were iinediately smashed at a sewer opening alongside police headquarters. The defease regarded this testimony as important because Fred Billingsley testified that he paid a bribe of .$(i(lo to Beckiugham in a secluded place near the car riage works, with the understanding that the truckload of liquor was to be turned over to the liillingsleys. Detective Doom was tho second witness.
