This is rea-7.uriri(r to the league members who have been most active in or'ani.in local forces for the pur pose of collecting and disseminating such information as is desired. Its work has scarcely beim; yet not all of the seed llius sown has fallen anions the tares by the wayside. 'J'his suffjrt'ts to the leaiin that its special mining number soon to be issued by the Mail Tribune, with specific data eoucerninK conditions of development here, will hriiitf a rich harvest of in quiries and a volume of personal in vestigations never before realized in this region. The weather and its effect on travel' in I he mountain districts so far this season have been extremely unfav orable to the prosecution of the work undertaken in the matter of ejilhcrin the desired data by personal visit and ili.-pcctioti ; but the fa ft thai the ides of March are here, brin'in with them midwinter conditions - an ex traodimirv circumstance in seasonal progress in southern Oreuii suy- ests that soon the other extreme may he expected. I hen the waiting throng of miners and prospectors will he able to pursue their work in the hills, while representatives of mining in ve iincnt companies, who are appar ently anxious to come and obtain in formation first-hand, will he able to make the neeessrry investigations. iophei-lng the Surface, .lay ('. Monte, who has devoted sev eral weeks to looking about this ter ritory for "mining snaps,' left Sat urday morning for San Kruncieo, his western headquarters. Like most mining investigators, he has pursued his tak practically incognito and has litlle to say in definite statements about what he found. ( 'oncernimr t he re-ulti of two or three vi-it. to The Meadow district he sn: 'I believe it is a rich di-triet and more exten-ive than pro-peeling to date has revealed. It will not be expensive to work theta. 'Pocket -hunter-' appear to have combed the di-triet in former year-:. Mr. Moatc's description of The Meadow.- di-tiict may be extended practically to all of the mineral area of southern Oregon and northern Cal ifornia ''Gophering' characterize much of the development wrrk in all of them. Many extraordinary pock ets of gold have been found in thi region. notably in the Gold Hill dis trict. Many are yet looking for pock ets in a manner that indicates that le-is than a tub of gold will not satisfy them. Pocket Ijnnliim becomes a habit among miners who have had a little Miccc-s at it. They promi-e them-.-.elves that, when they find tin' next big pocket, they will settle down to mining Icigilimntely. Not many of them find the next pocket ; hut it is their wild oals period in the gold hunting business and some of them never get beyond it. Mr. Monte, it will lie observed, speaks very conservatively of The Meadows district. Mining men know that it is an unusually rich region; hut those who have claimed most of (lie area there are not able financially to develop their properties. They are waiting for investors to share their promise of wealth and help theni to tunnel it out of the earth. It is that class of mining men whom I he league is now reaching with its information concerning the mineral attractions of southern Oregon.
