In many instances these operations pro d under marked dis advantages compared with the ndvnn tildes under winch southern Oregon mines may be operated. Natura we are lavored by an abuiulance. of limber in all of the local districts. In most, of them there is ahuiulunt water and in olhers not so favored the wa ter niay he easily developed. Our most distant tiroup is cnly fifty miles truin the Southern Pacific rail road at Mcdford. A patented smeller site is located centrally in this min ing region. Most of the mines, al ready demonstrated to possess rich ores in liold, copper and cinnabar, are Inline! proposition-. In no case will a road lo anv of the groups or camps be a difficult eimiiiccriny proposition. Willi all of these advantages, ninny of them of prime importance in the economy of mining operations, devel opment of our vast mineral resources in this region could proceed rapidly and at nominal cost. Fortunes Paid in Operations. These comparisons, given in skele ton form, strongly urge the concen tration of all our forces of enteiprisc and progression upon the one purpose of allracling capital to this rich field of mineral deposits in great areas and thus secure their development in the earliest possible period. Capital paid out as tlie expense of operating these mines would amount to fortunes each month. A mine 'earning $1,000.0110 a month pays out approximately $'J"0.000 a month as local expense. A mine or two of each f three principal groups in this vi cinity would, if in full operation, pay out locally not less than $2,000,000 n month. An overdraft on your imag ination is not necessary in figuring out the stupendous benefit siu-h oper ations would he to every business cen ter in southern Oregon and northern California. The common and natural converging point for extensive com mercial transactions in all of this im mense district i- Medloid. C, ClarliBOU, two of tho forest rangers, who have been employed making a wagon road this side of the Dead Indian springs, stay ed here Wednesday night. They re port that owing to the extraordinary cold weather and deep snow that they have not accomplished as much as would be desired. They wero on their way out to Medford. Mr. Suminerville was formerly a res ident of Mcdford, but now his lioine is In Portland. He is traveling in the Intorest of tho Mlthanaka Mfg. Co., of Indiana. ' A. C. Kleder of L. C. was here for dinner Thursday, tits home Is up the north fork of Little Butte creek near tlie McAltster soda springs and he reports that tho snow thero was ahout thrco feet deep and still snow ing; that his brother Charles, while feeding his cattle, having his dogs with him, said that his dogs found tho carcases of three deer that had heen killed by tiro coyotes; that they were killing quantities of deer now since tho snow was so deep that they could run on top of tho frozen snow while the deer would break thru. If our county court would spend more of tho proceeds from our taxes trying to exterminate the coyote instead of paying men to go nround nniong tho people who live in tho backwoods to watch them to keep them from kill ing a deer occasionally for food for their families, it would be a saving proposition, for the coyotes kill enough young stock Including pigs every year, to have a nice fund brought in, In tho way of taxes on the stock that they kill. Speaking on the subject of taxes, I see by the delinquent tax list that tho people In our little town aro be hind in their taxes ?5ti7.55, aud three of them are owing $2311.27 of that and the rest Is scattered around town among thirty others, although these are several who own property here and have moved away or bought lots for sptculation, but that does not lessen the load on those of us who pay up every year, and this list is not for 1015 alone, hut about the same list appeared .last year and many of them the year before,' and I heard one of our heaviest taxpayers com plaining that those who pay aro bur dened with a tax that should be met by all the property holders, and he asked If there is not way to get the money out of the property. .Mr. and Mrs. 14. GERMANY ILL I AMSTKUDAM, Feb. ti. -In an in Icrview in the Tagelische UundsclioMU, Albert Halliu, director general of l'ue Hamburg-American line, says thai Uoriiuiny can be most highly snti-ficd with the success, so far, of unrestrict ed submarine warfare, llerr Halliu says that the object of the campaign was not lo sink ships, but to stop commerce with Kngland that this had been fully attained as neutral traffic was stagnating. Heferring to lite German ships lying in United States harbors, llerr Hal liu said that a treaty existed between Germany and America, which did not allow confiscation nnd that he had no C round to assume that the United States would not observe this treaty. President Wilson, he added, had based the rupture of dinloiualic relations on international law nnd lliorcfore he considered it nuite impossible that the president would himself, disregard in ternational relations.
