NAVY Heat! of Navy Says Sea War Depends Mostly Upon Individual Fighter Single Sailor May Win Naval Bat tleReally Excellent Opportunity for Career Now Offered. ii.v oilson OAnnxKii. washixutox, i). c, Feb. The navy department is prepnring to recruit 47..'00 additional men. Plans have been worked out to han dle the rush of applications which will come when it is known throughout the country that men arc uctuully wanted for the navy. Secretary Daniels admitted, when I taw him ul his residence, today, that the service is preparing to enlist enough men to put the reserve fleet in commission. "There will be no lack of men,'' said the scVrotury, "when the young men of the country hear that the country needs thein. "The chance to bo of service- on one of our magnificent lighting ships is a chance that thousands of .patri otic hoys will jump nt. "Of course, we cannot take all who apply. ... "Last January seven out of eight applicants had to be rejected, bat the strength of the enlisted force was in creased during; that, month u thou sand men, after allowing for retire ments uiul the termination of enlist ments." t'nder the law recently enacted the president has authority in time of war or threatened war to increase the enlisted force in the navy by an additional 30,000 men. The present time is such tin emergency. Move Men Seeded. llefore beginning on these enlist ments, however, there are JT.oOO men to be enlisted ns part of the peace strength authorized by congress last session. A total strength of .7-1,500 was au thorized n year ago, of which only u'i.OOO have been enlisted. Ten thousand have been enlisted since the law was passed. Adding 30,000, which the president muy authorize without additional congressional action to tho 17,500 al ready, .authorized, makes I7,500 chances for new men in the navy. "It is u wonderful opportunity," said the secretary, "for a young fel low who .lias the right stuff in him and wants to do his part in a big way. ."There is.no place in war where Die individual man counts so much ns on hoard one of our battleships. "hi h gun crew the work of every man is essential to success, and there is uo pine in the world where team work counts for ho much. "The success of the gun crew muy lie due to the skill and faithfulness of "ne man on it, .just as its failure might be caused by the failure of one man. "And the success of the ship might be due to the success of that one gun crew, and the winning of a battle might bo due to the success of that ship. Daniels I'non Henrico. As to what tho 'navy may bo called upon to do, Secretary Daniels is nee cssarilv silent. Nobody discusses officially what is in everybody s mind. There is no harry, no exciteaieut; but it is evident that everything is ready One word starts the machinery, just as one touch on un electric button may start the machinery in some tre mendous mannlaeluring plant the best part of the navv is ready to the last man, but tlicie is a reserve fleet which will not be ready until enough volunteers have presented themselves to pat the shiiis on the sea.
