MEDFOIiD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, ORECIOX. SATURDAY. JANUARY 27. 1017 PAOE FIVE OF TUDAY'S MARKETS There are two common diseases of the rose lo'this fUlley, namely, mil dew and Black Spot. Mildew: Of the two the mildew la the most destructive and Is especially serious on rambler varieties. There are two stages or mildew, the sum mer stone be:ng the most common and destructive, and is readily recog nised by its dusty-white growth over the surface of the leaves, young growing shoots and buds. The leaves are curled and the normal functions are checked thereby reducing the vi tality of the plants to such an extent that the bloBsoms may be worthless. A winter spore Btage may sometimes be found on either the canes or old leaves. On the canes it is found as a dense felt-like mat of gray or brownish mycelium (fungus growth) below the old leaf scar which con tains the spores which will start in-frt-tion in spring. It is well to re move such infected canes as well as fallen leaves. Black Spot: Circular spots develop on the upper surfaces of the leaves in which radiating strands of fungus mycelium can be seen. Sometimes several spots will grow together and often' covering the -whole leaf sur face Control Measures for both dis eases: , . 1. Careful cleaning up of all Meaves and destroying them by burn ing.., 2. Thorough spraying with any good fungicide as a dormant spray. The ground below the bushes should be sprayed covering a radius of about threo feet besides spraying the bushes thoroughly. Lime and sul phur 1 part to 12 parts of water or blue stone 1 opn'.o to one gullou wuter can be used. As a double pro caution make two dormant applica tions, one at tills time and one just before tho buds commence to swell. Should mildew show up later In the season spray with potassium sul phide 1 ounce to 4 gallons of atcr on ncw foliage and 1 ounce to 2 gallons of water for older foliage. Prepare the spray for each 2 gallons of water for older foliage. Prepare tho spray for each application as it deteriorates on standing, and make frequent np plications so that new growth and foliage IB kept covered. For Black Spot use strong com mercial ammonia rather than wash ing ammonia U . pint, carbonate of . capper .ounce -to 4 -gallon's iiof water. Dissolve the copper carbonate in the ammonia and have somewhat less ammonia than what will dissolve the entire amount of copper carbon ate. .Use this spray when the black spot first appears and, repeat several tlhics at Intervals of a week or ten days. .Recommendations will bo given later for the control of aphis of roses COUNTY PATHOLOGIST.
