GORE WINS FIGHT MARY GARDEN SINGS AT HOBO COLLEGE IL HrF.TDrOTCP MATTi "TRTr.UXE. MKOFORD. OKiiONT. FRIDAY. JAXTUtT 20, 1017 F SALEM, Jail. 20. After a hard fiKht In the house, Representative Gore of Jackson comity won his fight yesterday mid secured the adoption of a resolution memorializing con gress to uid the Crescent Ctly harbor with an aproprlutiou of $300,1)00 or more. The memorial precipitated a long dubato, a minority protest of the com mittee opposing it. lt'wls Ijends Attack. Lewis, in supporting the minority report, made an attack upon the waste of time by the house. Belland, the fighting member from Clatsop, came right back at Lewis, with the charge that Lewis wasted two thirds of the time of the house with unnecessary measures and talk, and moved the previous question, which was lost. Then the house con tinued its talk. Goro. of Douglas and Jackson supported the fight against it. ' The Rogue rivor delegation argued that the Crescent City Improvement meant much to their section of the state, while Peck and Tlchenor con tended that it was a movement that would benefit California more than Oregon; that Coos bay and Port Or ford both offered lust as good har bor facilities. It not better, and that, if the government once turned Its at tention to Crescent City, the Oregon harbors would not bo taken caro of for many years. lfcpresoiitutive Gore made his mai den speech in I he house, presenting an able and well-hainuecd speech in support of the measure. Ue spoke lit length, rcjiurdingr the necessity for mi outlet for the immense resources of the southern Oregon country. He told of the many hundreds of thous ands of tons of copper ore which is awaiting cheaper transportation fa cilities, of the immense timber re sources, ami of tile high cost of get ting; fruit, one of the principal indus tries of southern Oregon, to the east ern markets. Willi u harbor at Cres cent City, a means would be immedi ately furnished for cheaper transpor tation, and it would open up one of the..iiclicst undeveloped areas left in the' United States, and one that the resources of which have barely been touched. Several members look issue with Sir. Gore, contending (hut the state of Oregon had no interests in the affairs of California, and stated that they would vole against (lie memorial. Shortly after the vote had been taken Representative Gore arose and congratulated the house on the action taken, and slated that he had just re ceived a telegram from Washington informing him that congress had just appropriated $'.'00,000 for t lie Cres cent City harbor. Memorial Ts Adopted. The memorial w-as finally adoptod by a vole of 3!) tor and IS against. Tho house then adopted liouso con current resolution 2, providing for a joint committee to discuss Columbia river fishing jurisdiction laws with a similar committee from the Wash ington legislature. ' Senate joint memorial No.- 12, by Huston memorializing congress to take immediate action on Susan B. Anthony equal suffrage amendment was adopted. Senator Gill's memorial asking congress to urge development of water power resources of the state of Oregon was adopted. The memorial by Tichenor asking congress to establish a naval base at Port Oi ford was adopted with a few scattering negative votes from Doug las, Jackson and Clatsop counties. SALKM, Or., Jan. 2(1. Later a (Jerman who recognized the destroyer stated that it was in a sink ing condition. The German torpedo boat, although. its speed had been di minished by the collision with the Y-(if) ami by ramming the British de stroyer, succeeded in reaching a German base unhindered by the en emy.
