A Pemnmbuco dispatch to the, Daily Mail describes the capture and destruction of the Ilntish steamer Dramatist by , the rmnn commerce raider. The Dram atist sighted the raider on December when it was seven miles distant. The Ocrmuu rapidly closed in and hen alongside hoisted the (icnnnn naval ensign and signalled the Brit isher to stop. Immediately afterward trap doors under the bulwarks at the 'aiders forecastle were dropped, re alius two guns of about 21o-ineh iliber trained on the Dramatist. An armed boatload of Germans boarded the British ship and its of ficers, engineers nnd part of its crew were sent on board the raider. The remainder of the crew were left on board for five hours and then remo-v ed and the steamer was sunk by cx- osives. The crew of the Dramatist, with the exception of seven Indian fire men who remained on tile raider, were transferred to the Hudson. The cap fives complain of the food nnd sani- iiry arrangements, but say tho Ger mans were courteous as a rule and gave receipts for their captures. One receipt was signed '"Woltt." A mem her of the crew has a photograph ol the raider and various pictures of the sinking of the Nantes, taken by -small concealed camera. The men of the Dramatist say that. the raider appears like an ordinary cargo steamer nnd when passing neu tral ships hoists the British colors but flies the German Hag when sijfbts a British ship. plo BY MOTHER CITY SALEM, Ore., Jan. 20. Stanley Lydiard was laying in sup plies In Medford the first of the week Nearly fifty acres of orchard have been pulled out in this district In less than a year. Owing to the long nnd exceptional cold spell much fear is entertained for tile fall sown grain 4n tills dis trict, which was just beginning to show above ground before the freeze. An Ashland grain buyer was in quiring about wheat In this vicinity few days ago. but received very little encouragement as there are only a few hundred bushels In the district and practically all of this is needed for seed. At the present time thero Is less grain sown In the district than for many years and with the high price of seed and the seeding of threo large ranches to sugar beets, indications point to another short crop. This week the Collins pear orchard which was just coming into hearing is being pulled out to clear the ground for tho growing of sugar beets this year. In tho orchard arc many young trees which were set out a year ago. Mr. Collins Is selling these trees to his neighbors for ten cents each During tho last few days tho river has been filled with floating ice. something that Is very seldom seen in this country.. men who aro entirely helpless to do- rend themselves.
