1916 YEAR OF PROGRESS
(Continued From Page One.)
have been voted with which to im
prove tho roads to the IMuo I, edge so
that with tho opening of spring, haul
lug of ore will begin in earnest with
a fleet of nuto trucks, which are al
ready on their way from eastern fac
tories. dn Medford proper building activi
ties have heen confined during the
past year largely to the erection of
income properties. The exceptions
to buildings of this character arc the
federal building, erected at a cost of
$1 10,000 and St. Mark's church,
which cost, exclusive of lot and fur
nishings, In tho neighborhood of
$5,0011.
.New Buildings lOititeil.
Tho appearance of main street has
been considerably Improved by the
ndditlon of new husinoss blocks and
by remodeling of old buildings. On
the corner of Main and Kir has been
erected a one-story while porcelain
brick finished structure with a front
of a half block. This building has
been so constructed that with the
growth of the city, other stories may
be addeti as they aro needed. This
modern structure stands on the
ground formerly occupied by tho Ho
tel Moore and a number of one-story
frame buildings.
DeVoe's grocery is now housed in
a one-stnry brick building on the cor
ner of Main and Onkdnlc streets. The
series of frame and brick rooms ad
joining the Medford Hotel, formerly
occupied by the store are now being
razed.
(New ninrble fronts have been
placed In tho buildings on the half
block on the north side of Main
street nl l-'ir.
The building occupied by N'unnl's
bakery, on Kir street, off Main, has
been entirely remodeled, n front of
white porcelain brick and plate gluss
being Installed. Within tho building
machinery lias been installed for the
making of bread under modern scien
tific methods. As an atldpicu to
Medfurd industries during 191tt. may
be cltetl the erection of a plant h
tho ltex Spray Co. This plant re
placed the one burned down at Tcl
ent several years ago. The laun'.tiu
plant of the Knight Parking Co.. wa
also completed during Hie past yoi.r.
Another Improvement is the build
ing of the Holland apartments, in
connection with the Holland hotel,
which are Hearing completion, at a
cost of $;,ii00. John A. Westerluiul
is owner.

heckled:
Dear Sir:
An you arc aware, there are two
competing propositions before the
people looklUK to the adjustment of
the paving assessment matters, an 1
as the people and tax payers of this
city are vitally Interested in the
proposition, and as the author of this
letter are supporters of what is
known as the -Medynski plan, believ
ing the same to he the only fair,
honest, and equitable solution of the
problem. And you are, and. have
been during the whole controversy,
attorney for the city; and as such, 1
assume, that It was uuder your ad
vice and direction that what is known
as the Hanson plan was launched.
And wo bellevo that said plan is
wholly inadequate, unjust, unfair, In
equitable and unworkable and iucd-
fenslble.
We, therefore, challenge you to
come before tho people and taxpayers
of .Medford and defend the same. At
least, give us some reason, if you
can, why such an unjust burden
should be placed upon the people.
To that end and purpose, we request
that you, as city attorney, appear be
fore the citizens and taxpayers as
sembled at the Pago Theatro on llie
5th day of January, 1917, at N
