Hamill Orchard Example of Use of
Water Upon Tract 275 Boxes in
1915 of Poor Fruit, 2500 Boxes
Fancy Fruit in 1916 With Irrigation.
Irrigation brought extraordinary
returns both on apples and pears this
past Ktason on the orchard of H. W.
Hamill, according to W. K. Morris,
foreman.
The frreatest increase was in the
yield of apples. Io. 191.1, 275 boxes
were haaled to the pnekiug house, and
these were of such poor quality that
they did not sell for an amount suf
ficient to cover the freight.

In 1916, from this Rime block of
apple trees, 2o00 boxes were hauled
to the packing plant. This fruit was
of more than average size, running
as a whole, 123 apples to the box.
. Almost as preat an increase in
yield was made in the pear crop. In
the 1915 season, 200 boies of fruit
of inferior fcizo and quality were
picked.
In 1916, from the same trees, 1400
boxes of pears wero Hacked. The
'greater part of these "ears packed as
extra fancy half boxes, and almost
all the remainder as extra fancv
boxes. The return from the fruit
were uniformly hw;li but another
year may be' expected to be increas
ed, inasmuch as better provision will
be made for handling pears of very
large siio by placing them in extra
fancy half boxes on special markets.

,"The increase in yield, Mr. Morris
Mated, can be attributed to nothinp
but the use of irrigation. Previous
to the time water was supnlied from
the Phoenix ditch there was nothing
to indicate a crop anv Imver than
that of the previous seanon. Both
seasons tho trees were well set with
buds, which without water simply
dried on the trees.
. Another heavy pear vield obtained
with the use of irrigation the past
season was on the llolloway orch
ards, where 4'JOO boxes were picked
from twelve acres, a yieid of 3."0
boxes to the acre. This fruit was of
uniformly high quality.

of the Amcricao'Ncwspa
per Publisher!,' association held
meetings here today to name commit
tees to meet tomorrow with a com
mittee of paper manufacturers and
federal trade commission agents to
form a plan of equitablo newsprint
paper distribution. All will meet to
gether tonight to plan a policy to put
before the commission.
The American Newspaper Publish
ers' association meeting individual
publishers expressed doubt as lo the
practicability . of the distribution
plan and asked that the publishers'
committee seek of the trade ronuuU
bion and the manufacturers tomor
row aome assurances of lower prices
through increased production. There
is' an increasing demand among the
publishers, it was said at the meet
ing, that the deportment of justice
posh complaint filed a few days
ago charging paper manufacturers
with coosjnraey to raise prices.

'The crowded condition of the
store and the increased quantity of
inflammable material exposed during
the Christmas reason renders it im
portant to the merchant that the
electrical wiring in the vicinity of his
display shall be practicallv devoid of
hazard and that the nature of his
decorations and their arrangement
shall be such as to reduce to a mini
mum the danger of fire from elec
trical or other causes,' states City
Electrician I.. E. Ilinnuin, who has
issued the following warning:
"Owing to the more prevalent use
of lamps of high caudle power, the
danger whk'h always attends the ex
posure of paper shades or other com
bustible material to the heat of in
candescent lamps has been greatly
increased. This danger is nluovs
greater in show w indow inclosures or
other confined spaces where the ven
tilation is poor. To avoid such risk
it is, therefore, necessary that all
inflammable merchandise or decora
tions be kept at a safe distance from
lamps and sockets.
"It is undesirable to use tinsel or
other metallic decorations in the im
mediate vicinity of lamps, as they are
liable to work their wav into tfce

circuiting. "Wires used as supoits for mer
chandise are liable to become alive if
attached to lighting fixtures from
which current may leak. It is, there
fore, important that all wires and
supports used for this purose shall
be suspcuded from structures that
are mechanically secure and not li
able to electrical derangement.
"It is especially desirable that ull
teni'Hirary wiring in the vicinity of
the display shall be mechanically nud
electrically secure and kept out of
reach of tho careless or inquisitive
shopper.
"As many fires in show windows
and display rooms ore caused by
small defects in the wiring not read
ily observed by inexjicrienced per
sons, or from the use of electrically
oieratcd specialties and signs of un
approved design, it is very important
that the inspection authorities should
be consulted in respect to the safety
of such wiring and devices before any
attempt is made to operate them
electrically. In brief, it is only
through united action ou the part of
those who have an immediate con
cern in safeguarding the interests of
the merchants and the public that
the danger of fire from defective
i electrical display lighting features in
the stores can be nvoided. and to that
end the co-o;erntion of the nicrehant
is earnestly and cordially solicited."

Episcopal edifice at the corner of
North Oakdale and Fifth streets, has
been completed und the opening ser
vices and the ceremony of laying the
cornerstone will be held' next Sun
day. The Rt. Kcv. Walter Taylor
Sumner, bishop of Oregon, will lie in
attendance and preliminary to the
Sunday ceremonies there will be an
informal social gathering at St.
Murk's hull Saturday evening ut
8:30 of the members of the parish
and St. Mark's (iuild, in honor of
the bishop.

S a. m., holy communion; at 11 a. m.,
Hishop Sumner will deliver a sermon
