It may conic upon tlieni in tlic middle of t lie night, or when they liave liceii many hours alone, or in the midst of a great storm, or at first sight of the ocean, or of moun tain peaks, or when listening to wonderful music, or read ing a classic book. Many persons who have no obvious connection with the war have some indefinable feeling of being very much at fault when they read the plain truth about its horrors as told, for instance, by Charles lOdward Russell in this issue. t is impossible for sensitive souls not to feel a personal reaction to the war, not to succumb to this subconscious ac cusation of being responsible for the sins of the race, iiot to lie obsessed with a need to compensate, somehow, indi vidually, for the whole tremendous wrong. There are hundreds, thousands of men anil women who would die gladly, by any torturing process, to end the war. They are all sane people, persons who are never moved by hysteria or revivals or the mob spirit, often persons who "have everything to live for." .Some of them have never put the question to them selves. They could not define the emotion, perhaps, but if the question of living or dying to save Europe were put to them, they would in all sincerity reply immediately in the affirmative. Or if action were possible, thev would drop all human interests on the instant and turn to the great sacrifice. This is fundamental religion, as it has been developed by the war, "Greater love hath no man than this, thai a man lay down his life for his friends." A HIGH PRICE FOR SIMPLICITY ONE result of the war is that the crowned heads of Eur ope are showing better taste, liaroness von 1 ledeniann, .official dressmaker to the ltritish royal family, has honored these shores with a visit, and expresses surprise at the styles displayed by American women. Since the war, women's wardrobes have been cut down to the barest necessities, the baroness reports. "As a symbol of the sadness that prevails, no decollete is considered good taste. A curtailment in the display of diamonds is also very evident. The queen may be seen at night wearing a simple aigrette, a small crown or a little string of pearls; but nothing more ostentatious." Mow, isn't that charming! 5ut it strikes us that, the common people of Europe are paying a heavy juice for their royalty's education in simplicity. Idaho for Wilson IIOISK, Idaho, Nov. S.
