The beautiful evenings during tho summer Unit Medford enjoys, practically Insures the regular weekly nppcaranco of our band at the park, Indeed the concerts have been so reg ular and successful this season that the public are finding It very difficult io realize that the season Is at an end. Yet It Is not allngclher the climate that assures the punctual appearance of a local band. Oilier cities enjoy rllmale loo, hut their bunds Invar iably appear somewhat Intermittent ly. "Un,seen hands," the invisible government, a por tion of which was exposed when President Wilson routed the "lobby" have played a prominent, perhaps dominant, part in every political campaign. "Unseen hands" finance political campaigns to secure special legislation to reimburse them for their expenditure. "Unseen hands" financed Mark Hanna and in return secured protection for financial brigandage. They are fin ancing Hughes' campaign with a lavishncss unknown since the days of Hanna. "Unseen hands" are reaching for the control of govern ment, seeking, through Hughes' election, intervention and exploitation of Mexico; for more tariff jobbery; for halting the progress of human welfare by child labor laws and eight-hour days. "Unseen hands" are unceasingly at work, injecting the racial Issue to punish the president for neutrality, for not yielding to the kaiser to please Germany, and for not de claring war on Germany to please Britain; injecting the religious issue, to penalize the president for having a Cath olic secretary on the one hand, and not intervening to save church property in Mexico on the other. "Unseen hands" are working to destroy the federal reserve bank act and substitute a central bank controlled by "Wall street; they are seeking to destroy federal control of merchant marine to .substitute subsidies. They seek to abolish freedom of sailors to restore serfdom on the high seas. As the Xew York "World puts it: "The great ipostle was talking of the spiritual life when he said that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hut republican faith in the election of Mr. Hughes is the substance of very worldly things hoped for and the evidence of these very fleshy hands not seen. And Mr. Hughes works with them admirably and in perfect command. That is why he cannot be made to answer spe cific questions in a specific manner." WHAT ABBOTT WOULD HAVE DONE LYMAX ABBOTT, editor of the Outlook, will vote for Hughes. He is disgusted with the Wilson policy. If he were president he would have done differently. For instance: "I would have called a conference of all the neutral nations and asked them to unite with the United States in vigorous action to protect the rights of neutrals. "I should like to have proposed to that conference to take possession of all German 'shipping in neutral ports, to open all neutral ports to the ships of the allies, to put an embargo on till exports to Germany and all imports from Germany in a word, to notify Germany by action that so long as she disregarded the rights of neutrals she could not expect from them the acts of neutrals." Mind you, Lyman Abbott would "like to have pro posed" all this to the conference. Granted the neutral na tions would have submitted to his proposal, does Lvman Abbott think the United States would have remained neutral 1 In fact, would the conference itself have been entirely neutral if it considered the banishment of a nation from the civilized world? Thanks to the people of the bott is not president. CAR SHORTAGE XTIJH are the railroads short of ears? Phenomenal increase management, docs not account I'.vcrv road is short ol cars. CALIFORNIA FOR WILSON (Continued from page one) Whether one agrees with It or not, there Is no blinking tho fact the peace feeling is very strong. In the suf frage states a great many women commend the president to the utmost for keeping the country out of war!" Only liip Service "How about the visit of Justice Hughes to this state?" 1 asked. "A terrible frost; everybody con ceded that." "How about the Johnson progress ives?" "I believe most of them at herrt are for Wilson. There Is no Hughes enthusiasm in the Johnson camp. Whatever lip service may bc rendered Hughes, the votes will be lacking at the ballot box." Discussing general Issues, Kent said: "The tariff Is deservedly dead. A nonpartisan commission, in contin uous session, und required to report roth to the president and congress. "War conditions have upset the hard and fast theory of a tariff for protection or a tariff for revenue. "Retention of the duty on sugar was plainly a war measure for the purpose of putting the country on a more self-sustained basis in cas it isho, lld bc dsturbetl. The same action by tho democrats in the case ot dve stuffs shows the president and hi? party will not allow a worn-out for mula to stand in the way of the coun try's business welfare." Siu'tfo of Prowess As to tho Mexican situation, Kent prefers to trust Wilson's experience and intentions rather than to turn the things over lo Hughes, who is known to be under he influence of certain selfish interests seeking a war of conquest and possibly annexation. Among the notable achievements of Wilson, Kent named tho Alaska rail road, the promise of the. president to veto the Shields water power bill, the federal reserve act and the depart ment of agriculture's campaign against foot and mouth disease. Kent concluded: "To me It will he a sad commentary on our form of government and on the capacity of our people If they fail to recognize the steady strong surge of progress shown in the past four years, and are turned by a foolish party appeal from the evident interest of the country, which will be the best served by the return of President Wil-!the son to office."' Xo new arguments were Introduced however, and the chancellor's oppon ents have not permitted themselves to be convinced. The alignment of the reii hstag parties pn the question has undergone little change since the struggle of last spring, In which the chancellor's party -was victorious.
