II. Friizcllc, one of the Oregon suffrage leaders, to Mrs. 0. 11. l Belmont's appeal for .'"1(1(1,00(1 to help elect Hughes. Ilcr reply reads follows : "Multuiunali, Or., Sept. 110. . "Mrs. 0. II. 1'. Hcliuont, East Forty- first street, New York City. "Dear Mrs.' Hclmont : Your appeal for money for the Hughes fund, dated September El, is received. I was born a republican and the tariff question made me favor that party for years. Now that the tariff is to lie handled by a commission, I must decide for the best man in the future. Can't Trust Hughes' Smile I can't trust the Muglies smile. I feel tiiat his promise to the women is only a hollow promise, made with the knowledge that he would not have to sign a suffrage amendment until it had first passed the house and sen ate; a most unlikely occurrence were the 1 enroses and the Sinoots once more in control. President Wilson has made us no answer which he cannot carry out. In other words, he has been perfectly honest with us. I, therefore, prefer to help the cause of one who holds out no false hopes. The suffrage amendment we desire to be drafted was in congress when Tuft and lionscvelt were in )owcr. They were rcpuhlicnns and did nolh ing; and Hughes in his promise is only playing for the women's vote. I will do my campaign work for Wilson, the holiest. In this state the majority of the women are standing tor u ilson, and the sultrnge cause has lost many of its best workers be cause of the foolishness of the con gressional union and (be woman s party in trying- to throw the Oregon women's vote to Hughes. Injuring; the Cause You are definitciv injuring1 the cause of suffrage among Oregon wo men. We will never again work to gethcr as we did before this split, which you and your followers have forced upon us. You are causing the same split in other states, and, therefore, yon have given suffrage the greatest setback that it could be given. It will take at least ten years of hard work by the saner women to overcome the blow you have given suffrage in trying to force your candidate for president upon us by the expenditure of cash. Women, ideal women, want a man to be elected for some better reason than the mere expenditure of cash. Hoping that you and your follow ers may again return to the real suff rage cause and forget party, I am, Sincerely vours, EMMA II ALKY FHAZELLE." fr . vi iff' r fir 1 Top Iclt, .ii(lj;t! riulhp- bottom lei'!, Milton )vrr. iirrlntri't who lc-sim-il tlit wnrliliniiM' to wlm-h lu in scntrnci'd. and Mrs. Mui'mirrt Ili'iirv, socii-lv woiiuin, sentenced to work house, m court s attempt to Mop unto spee'Hne in Clevelnml. , EJ 4 IS.
