IirCillKS' i-ainpaiirn is nut only a surprise t tin ili'iiiin-raN, linf repultlicai's als. Tin democrats in some respects have iiii'li-ri -a ted Jiim. His speech at ( 'lii -air" was V(iiil-i f ul. Tin thinking ih"iii1c whn reail those utleraiices will earnestly exclaim "thank Heaven America lias a states man at last." And we must all aL-ree that the denounce meiit of hot air and skittish horses, is well calculated to settle all political ijuestions, foreign ad domestic, except the Mexican (juestion and our relations with Jermany. These ijuestions Mr. Hughes is settlinu' ly denunciation of every act of the president. Mr. Hughes does not conde scend to explain what should have heeii done, but declares lie would have done liitK-h better, ami of ennrse we are bound to take his word for it, on account of his noble con sideration of "hot air." Mr. Unfiles' speeches show him to be a profound reader of the Hearst papers. J-'ollowin their cue he advances ar gument thaf-the president is the cause of the losses of our troops at Vera Cruz and Carri.al. Mr. Hughes does l'ot make it clear that he is displeased because too few were killed or too many, but thoughtful standpatters will prob ably be able to deduce his views, from his courageous dec laration against "hot air." Undoubtedly the democrats have underrated Mr. Hughes as an intellectual mountebank, and political scavenger, lint he must be voted for, because he is en dorsed by the supreme bhmderbus of the universe, William Howard Taft. Those who do not like .Mr. Taft. can find much comfort in the pronounciaiiieiito against "hot air." The ( i rant s Pass Courier is sorely vexed because Mr. Manly has been writing some criticisms of Mr. Hughes. The only way to elect Mr. Hughes is to stop people from writing, talking or thinking about him, till after election. Let -Mr. Hughes be proclaimed the sacred cow at once. "Where is T. L'ooseveltf Down at Oyster Bay waiting for one Charles Kvaus Hughes to send our S. 0. S. so he can get on the front page again. How he must suffer in the meantime. The editor of the Oregonian wants to improve the in itiative and referendum. Wonder if he ever thought of Irving to improve our citizens, so they would know better how to use such privileges.' Casoline and gas cars can never take the ulace of knowledge and brains. It is of more importance that vour boy or girl learn to love good books than to climb the Sis kivou giadc on high gear. An excellent write-up of Crater Lake, occupies two thirds of a page in the Portland Telegram of August 111 written by 1 (avid W.
