'4' PATJE FIVE MEDFORD MATL TRTBUNT, MEDFOTID. OTiEOOX. TTRTTiSDAY, 'ATJOURT 10, 1f)1G ,4 GORIZIA FROM AUSTRIASGRASP Story of Capture of Teuton Strong , hold Given Out by Italians Attack , .Begun August 4 Eenemy Positions Marked Otf by Aviators and De- molished by Concentration of Guns ROME, Aug. 10 The operations which led up to the capture of Gorlzia by the Italians are described in the following official narrative, given out here today: "The attack began on August 4 in the Monfalcone section against Hill 85 and 121 east of Kocca. We storm ed a very powerful enemy works there, taking lit prisoners, but the adversary had placed in abandoned trenches quantities of bombs, which exploded giving off clouds of poison ous gases just as our troops entered the captured lines. Heavy masses of the enemy then made counter attacks and our troops, stupefied by the gas, were forced to fall back to their own trenches. ; Artillery Itegim Tight, "On August 5 the artillery sounded the enemy's whole front with the ob ject' of distracting attention and fix ing the ranges accurately. On the morning of August 6 our bntteries opened tiro simultaneously on the rocky barrier, which from Sabotino to Cavario, defends the Isonzo and Gor izia to the west and against .Monte San Michele, which forms the north ern edge of the Clorlzlan Carso. The artillery action of the day, long and carefully worked out, represented a perfect example of concentrated fire against fortified lines. "Thanks to our aviators and to the observations of battery officers,, the positions of tho enemy had all been marked off clearly on target maps, and ranges for the extension and lengthening of fire had been calcu lated with the greatest nicety. Thus, . at the proper time, a veritable tem pest of shells fell' in a wholly unex pected manner on the positions of the enemy, demolishing everything syste matically. Infantry Advanced. "inrantry columns then advanced with customary dash, well supported by a curtain Tire of our artillery and carried the entire formidable Sabo tino rampart, which forms the base of the Gorlzia bridge head. On the heights which cover the city to the west, they stormed the defense of Oslavis and of the summit of Hill 200, which commands Gniffonburg. On the plain they drove in a defen sive line between the southern bor der of Podgera and Isonzo. They also attacked on the right bank of the river as far as Saint Andra. On the southern border of the Carso, Italian troops captured very strong linos on the summit of San Michele and the entrenchments running into the San Martino zone. Finally, In the Monfalcone section, a battalion of Bersaglieri cycalists from the Third, Fourth and Eleventh regiments, after a desperate struggle, captured all the defenses of Hill 85 and held out there against violent concentrated artillery, repulsing furious counter-attacks by the Austrian infantry. Capture of Heights. "Possession of the lateral pivots of the Gorizia bridge head being assured by the conquest of Monte Sebolino and Monte San Michele, it remained to take the imposing barrier, formed by the heights immediately west of the city. The battle ebbed and flowed incessantly for three days. The ground was fortified rtrongly and supported by a great number of lines of defense, thrown up by the adver sary close to Gorizia, 'an Important advantage which rendered it easy to offer stubborn resistance and enabled the Austrians to make violent counter attacks. Inch by Inch and that of generous sacrifices, our infantry with the admirable co-operation ef our artillery, conquered first the crest and then the southeastern slopes of the heights and stormed in numerable trenches, gradually driv ing the defenders before them, not withstanding repeated counter at tacks. "As a result of all of these con tinuous efforts, all the heights on the richt bank of the Isonbo. forming the bridgehead of the Gorizia. and Monte Ran Michele. on the left bank, were captured and securely held by the Italians. The lines of the Isonzo, below Tolmino Is assured to them, and their guns, dominating Gorizia. drove out the enemy lurking among the ruin?. This uninterrupted three day fight, covers with glory the troops jf the third army, commanded by the Duke. of Ao-ta." .lack Morrill of Gold Hill is In Hert ford today. A DM! OF CAR SHOW WASHINGTON', Auk. 10 Cur riers, shippers and consignors were warned today by the inter-stnte com merce conimissior, of a threatened eafc! shotnge and their attention called to the need for close supervision of load ing and unloading. Tim commission urged that curs ut, not used for stor age purposes, and suggested that the carriers return cars to their home lines as quickly as possible.
