A journal that finds its greatest joy in the service of plundering wealth and in betraying the public, queries whether a citiy.cn would select a man for judge of that court, whose character was assailed by an ex-president of this country and two presidents oft he American I Jar asso ciation. If the precedent could be established of rejecting men for such reasons, then the financial rulers of this country would be firmly entrenched in power, for who would doubt they could bring such an army of witnesses whenever desired? Who are the heads of the American Mar association' The attorneys of big business have controlled that organ ization and selected its officers for years. It has been used to affect and influence legislation in every way pos sible, in favor of the reactionaries and Hie domestic foes of our country, and in truth that is the reason the organiza tion exists. As for our ex-presidents, one has but to read the re corded utterances of one Theodore Moosevelt to doubt the mendacity and integrity of William II. Taft 011 matters such as this, and when he has sickened of that, let him read what Mr. Taft says of ex-President Roosevelt. He will then realize that our ex-presidents are not gods, but mortal men, such as you meet on the street every day, influenced by jealousy, envy, fear, hatred and selfish ambition. Of such big business ought to be able to maintain one or mure on its staff most of the time. When Harrison stepped out of the white house he entered the practice of law and worked for big business, and Cleveland did so, too. Mr. Taft has not done ho, but he pei-sists in traveling about the country bewailing the fact that there is a tendency to try to make this a government of the people in fact as well as theory. The fight against Mrandeis is a great political issue. The court has long been the refuge of our trusts. It is their citadel, and they want none but trusted men on guard. And that was the reason big business supported Mr. Taft with immense funds in the election of MMKS. Mig business wanted Moot, but doubted their.ability to elect him, but above all, they wanted-someone in the white house who could Mipply the supreme court vacan cies that were sure to occur in the next four years, with judges who could be relied upon to emasculate and destroy the Sherman anti-trust law. Hence they supported .Mr. Taft and he put on the bench five men who had been cor poration lawyers and corporation judges. Taft nominated Hughes, Van Hevanter, Lamar, Pitney and Murton. Among those who died and were succeeded by these appointments were Harlan and Mrewer, noble men who were above all the influences of powerful wealth. After the court had been packed with enough of these appointees of Wall street and the elevation of .Justice While to the chief justiceship, the court proceeded to de stroy the Sherman act b reversing all their former decis ions ami writing language into the law to change its mean ing and purpose to faor the I rusts, and gave us what the court called the rule of reason. In this decision they said in their opinion there were two kinds of trusts good and bad, and the Sherman act was meant only to apply to bad trusts, and that it is for the noble judges of courts to say what trusts are good or bad. This is the law of the land until congress changes it, but if congress should change the law, the supreme court could change it again. The supreme court gels the last whack. The system is fine. The people's representatives pass a law declaring twice two to Ik four. The supreme court says congress is mistaken, that as a rule twice two are four, but under some conditions twice two may be six. Then congress passes another law declaring that under all circumstances and conditions twice two shall always be deemed to Ik- four. Again it comes In.' fore the supreme court, and the court again deliberates and decides that vested rights have accrued under the general belief that twice two is six, ami the lasi ad confiscates propertv acquired under that Itelief, and is a iolation of the consti tution, because it would mean the taking of property with out tine process of law, and that there is no due process of law unless you have a judge or two on the bench to give ou what is justly due you from v our judges. Kormerly the trusts stout I fortified in the senate and their priwttch owned sctiaturs. Mut popular election of senators destroyed that, and the have moved to the next line of trenches -the supreme rottrt. The national polit ical contests of the past were tut the part of railroads and trusts, to control the senate, but from now on they will fight to control the supreme court. Hence they do not want Brau&'is, and To defeat him the compel all their in- IslnuneiiK trout c presidents hurl the filth at one who bus attil evpose I heir iUmicm.
