The development of the parks has stimulated the building of good highway, andSocrolary Lane intends that all parka shall be connected with adjacent railroads by good automobile roads, and further, that there shall bo it national highway connecting all of the fourteen parks. This is a tremendous program, but that is what, makes it attractive to Mr. Lane. The government survey of the Crater Lake highway in co-operation with the county and state is an instnneo of the active interest of the administration's interest in making the parks accessible. to the public. This survey will furnish tho needed data for future appropriations. .It is to be hoped that congress will pass the Kent bill a much needed measure. DIVISION REIGNS IN THE G. 0. War.' Kankake till I ReimhMaaM.J UT7" Or can't beat somebody with nobody." JL That is the predicament of the republican party at the present time. With many mediocrities seeking the presidential nomination, uniting upon any one of them seems impossible. The parly's quandary was shown when Ihe national committee having the matter in charge, after a two (lays' session, were unable to unite upon a temporary chairman. How different from the good old days! There is, of course, Iteosevelt, perpetual candidate, but he says he doesn't want the nomination except upon an heroic war basis, and the majority of his hero-worshippers will not follow him to tTie blood-soaked fields of gory tin sel glory. Nor is the nation, despite the jingo prepared ness agitation, willing to adopt militarism and its attend ant ills. And there is difficulty of healing the breach between the standpatters and the progressives. A La Kollette or aOumiuina will bu distasteful to the standpatter and a iMc Oall or a Weeks to the progressives. Only upon a neutral can they unite, and no strong man lias been icufral or eould be in a conflict between liberalism and toryism. The stand-patters have picked Hughes as the ideal compromise candidate but he has done nothing to com mend himself to the progressives. And Hughes has not responded to the frantic cry for help, and unless conditions change, is not likely to surrender a life position carrying more real power tlian tlie presidency tu lace tho uncer tainty of political strife. The division, indecision and irresolution marking the p re-con vent ion period is likely to continue into the conven tion and inlojhe cainmign a jatal handicap to success.
