But the present tendency is for further restriction, for the people are becoming educated out of its use not because of prohibition, but because of the uni versal recognition of increased efficiency due to abstin ence. Some of the buildings occupied by the saloon are still vacant, lor this is the jieriodof readjustment, but gradu ally they will.be occupied for other uses, with an eventual gain to the community. A good example has been set by the former liquor dealers themselves. One in this city has converted a former saloon into one of the handsomest, most attractive and well-patronized institutions in the city. And who can gainsay but that humanity is the gainer therebv? ATTDNHfT'S GAME GASOLINE FROM SHALE IN reply to a recent senate resolution on gasoline, Secre tary Lane calls attention to the feasability of manu facturing gasoline from shale, from which an almost inex haustible supply can be obtained. The United States geological survey bulletin states that shale contains many materials which, when heated, may be converted into crude oil, gas and ammonia. The increas ing cost of gasoline enables the profitable manufacture of gas trom tins material. The oil derived from the shale is similar to that which is being produced from wells. When refined by ordinary met nods t lie sliale oil yields an average ot about 10 per cent, gasoline, .'jf per cent kerosene and a large amount of par affin. The yield of gasoline may bo increased by the use of refining methods especially designed for that purpose. The gas, which is a very good illuminating gas, will per haps be sullicient to furnish all the head required to dis till the crude oil from the shale. Ammonia is a most vahr able byproduct of the distillation and may be utilized in the manufacture of commercial fertilizer or other nitrogen compounds, as the market demands. There are vast deposits of shale in southern Oregon which could be utilized for this purpose, as well as exten sive coal deposits, superior to the shale for the purpose, of manufacturing oil. They form one of the many undevel oped resources oi tlio region. REGISTER AT ONCE I'l-iini I It'll (o Utitrutiiro. For KxrhnHge Hurt Orpington hoiiH for McoiuUhnnil ltanilimtou typewriter. (Want ad.
