JJaiscldcn of Chicago for refusal to operate upon a defective babe to save its life. Great heaps of written rubbish have been piled up foi and against tho physician's action, Sentimental sob-sis ters are declaring for and against infanticide when prac ticed upon defectives. Probably every plrysieian has, in the course of his prac tice, found instances where his conscience justified refusal to follow the established code. The physician's calling is to relievo suffering, rather than perpetuate misery. Dr. Haiselden's chief offence is capitalizing his act of Humanity or inhumanity, as you choose to view it. lie used a brass band of publicity to parade, bringing both himself aild the unfortunate family he attended in the spotlight, lie commercialized tho advertising he secured, losing no time in securing contracts for newspaper and magazine ariielcs and for appearances upon the lecture platform. When anyone exploits his own acts as meritorious for the sake of coining money he arouses suspicion of his sin cerity. The verdict of the coroner's jury of six leading Chicago physicians, who held that there was no proof that the slaughtered babe was defective, coupled with ilaisel den's penchant for publicity, arouses tho suspicion that Dr. ITaiselden is something of a fakir. Given the same circumstances, not one in a hundred thousand physicians would consider it proper or ethical GOLD to conduct Jus case m the newspapers. Jlumairlifc is too sacred a thing to be bargained for publicity. A physician's relation with his patients are too confidential to parade in the press. The yellow journals are nb balm for a moth- mm er's agony. !If Dr. ITaiselden has sinned, it is not in an error of hon est judgment it is in sacrificing a human life for adver tising advantages.
