' Pellagra kills its victims with every accompaniment of horror, inflicting unspeakable agony, condemning its af flicted to a lingering death. Fretjitentlv it causes insanitv. J n V.)U it claimed f7,(X)0 deaths. In' 101.") it lias 75,000 victims. Until Dr. (Jolberger began investigation, it was the prevalent opinion mat tlie new American scourge was! caused by germs a slow infection like leprosy, but his research and experiments demonstrate conclusively that pellagra is nothing more nor less than starvation. Dr. Oolriberger says: Pcll.i'iii In Rtarvatlnn! The mHtcrloti8 plaguo that swept the south and Is threatening othor section ( f the country Is an outgiovvth of poverty! We vi' been giving our starving people medlt'lne, whon all they need Is food! J)r. tlolriberger noticed that the victims of pellagra were only the poor, usually the children of the poor; that the rich were immune. So he went to the poorhouses. where if was prevalent, anri examined ovovy factor of liv ing conditions, lie went to the prisons and used afflicted paupers anri convicts for experiments. My certain diets he caused pellagra, by other diets he cured ii. Pellagra is due to lack of muscle-building food, to lack of meat and legumes, to too much carbohydrates, starchy, farinaceous foods, like rice and corniueal to lack of var iety, to underfeeding. The remedy is proper dieting, plenty of fresh animal rood, plenty of milk and eggs, and the varied nutritious diet thai normal tippet ite craves. Hut the real cause is poverty. If is a fine commentary upon our "prosperijv" when the poverty of the people, canst san epidemic of disease due totffarvafion. P.'llagra is a pestilence of poverty and its cure is the abolition of poverty by establishing social justice.
