Several have eoiflo away admitting that this is true." IN America one-third of all tho pooplo who (Ho aro vic tims to long discuses -pneumonia and tuberculosis. If pneumonia were a beast, with sharp teeth and claws and n fierce a)pctite for human flesh, you would put locks on your doors, arm yourself and fight for your life. If somebody told you to let the beast, into your house and lock your doors and bar your windows so that tho beast couldn't get out until he had made a meal of you, you would look on that advisor as an enemy or a fool. If tuberculosis wore a ravenous bird of the carnivora sort, with sharp, hooked beak, mighty talons and fierce appetite for the flesh of children, you'd strive mightily to protect your little ones and turn a deaf car to those who should declare that that terrible bird was a good thing to have in the house. But, without beak, teeth or claw, pneumonia and tuberculosis kill, ignorance and recklessness enable them to kill one-third or all Americans who die, every year. If these' things wore claws and teeth, how the worid would laugh at us if we permitted them to kill us off at such a rate. But wo know that they kill through carbonic acid gas, foul air. To neglect to fight them off with fresh air is as foolish as to neglect to use a. gun agaiust a howling, hungry wolf. "With what horror would wo look upon the man who made his children sleep on the I rout steps with lious, tigers and other beasts roaring about the house. But ho would be no more foolish than he who makes his chil dren sleep in an atmosphere laden with carbonic acid gas. Death is there in ono case as certainly as in the other. Dr. Kd wnnl Carman described on tho wit ness stand today in Iiis wife's trial on tho charge of murder, the shooting of Mrs. Louise Railcy in his offico in Krceport, June 30 Inst. 1 lis story was identical with that related by him in the first trial. Mrs. Cnminn, who hnd prepared to testify in her own behalf late today, followed his testimony closely. It was dark, Dr. Carman said, when ho hcard'tlie crash of glass, and looking up saw a hand grasping a re volvcr thrust through the broken win don. The Fiato contends that the shooting occurred while it was yet daylight and opposes t?ie theory of tho defenso that tho assailant escap ed in the darkness.
