LAWSON, Colorado strike lender, has been J convieled by a Colorado jury ol' first degree murder in connection withthe death of John Ninnne, a deputy sher iff killed in n clash between mine guards and striking uiin eiSj and sentenced io life iinprisonmenl. It was not claimed that Lawson did the killing himself or was near the slain man, but that ho was in coinmand of the strikers. By the same logic .Tohn D. Rockefeller, Jr., is guilty of first, degree murder, as he was in command of tho deputy sheriffs that shot down the eleven children and two women in the tent colony at Ludlow. Tho Lawson verdict trumpets abroad the existing con ditions in Colorado. t shows how complete is the domina tion ot what lien Lindsey antlv termed "the .Beast and the .jungle. uovernor and legislators, militia and nonce of ficers, courts and jurors subserviently strive to carry out the orders of the Beast, whose mark'is on them all. Lawson's real crime is daring to organize the strikers, daring to defy the powerful mine-owners, daring to oppose Standard Oil. His temerity must be punished, and an ex ample made of him that will effectually deter other lib erty-loving souls from attempting to assert the rights of man in a Colorado mine or a Rockefeller camp. Hence the persecution hence the travesty on justice. To try Lawson, a special act of the legislature was nec essary and of course forthcoming. A special judge, for merly attorney for mine-owners, named. The prosecutor is also a former mine-owners' attorney. The witnesses are special detectives and deputies who admit on the stand that they have been employed to "get" Lawson. And the jury proved to be well chosen. Lawson may appeal, but ins appeal will probably be in vain. iMany tunes m the past tho Beast has shown absolute control of the courts in Colorado. One thing the Beast does not understand, that unjust persecution reacts and destroys the persecutor. Misuse and abuse of power undermines and eventually causes its collapse. Lawson. the martyr in labor's cause, becomes a national figure when Lawson, the strike leader, was a local personage. The persecution of organized labor stimulates its growth by tin-owing its grievances into the limelight and arousing public opinion to demand the eradication of abuses. The conviction of Lawson, like the massacre of Ludlow, proves the power of the mine-owners, but it also proves their folly, for they lose all they strove to gam, and more besides. There are none so blind as those who will not see. Be cause Ben Lindsey exposed the rottenness of Colorado, the Beast set out to destroy him. In twelve veal's he has been elected or appointed to office ten time's. He has faced two recalls. He has lived down calumny and misrepresen tation. He has been legislated out of office. Because he spoke on the 'J Shame of Colorado" in the east and exposed the feudal system of the coal barons and the horrors of the strike, the last legislature abolished his office, but the popular outcry was so loud that the governor was forced to veto the bill. The persecution of Lindsey has made him famous and ins majority grows with every fresh attempt to retire him. Yet the Beast, learning nothing by failure, mindly pursues its brutal tactics. And what part did John D. Jr., that mincing Mis? Nancy of the Sunday school, take in the Lawson parody? Un doubtedly the same part he took in the conduct of the strike secretly approving every cruel move to crush by might all opponents, while with smug hypocrisy protest ing innocence and mumbling platitudes that is the Rocke feller wav. (Written Kapcrlnlly for This Nowa- paper 1 CHAPTKIl III. Dressing to appear In photoplu)s Ik more of a problem than dressing for the street or tho drawing room. In tho one care you consult only your own taste. When ou act In tho movies you have to consult tho re quirements of tho character you rep resent, the time and the country In which the play In laid. In the course of a year I net many parts tho Ul lage maiden of plaldit and pigtails, tho country lass, with her shaking curls, tho society leader In silk and pearls, tho mountain maid In her tnttcred calico the adventuress In Jot ami velvets, the flxherumld with situ pic garb and windblown tresnos, and countless more, each requiring study as to fltnoss and deportment. Some film companies supply thu wardrobe, but most stars have- to fur nish their own. This Is an ndded element not only of expense, but alio of time. It takes precious hours of thought and pre paration, especially In tehse dnyn FULL E P. of realUm whn nudlcnres demand that ever thing about a movie play shall bo In keeping. A few years ago when tho movies were In their Infancy, 'anything "went," A fat dowager would wrap a lace curtain about her mountain. on koif and call It a robe. This would not be allowed today. Smart dressing Is domnuded where the character Is supposed to b a smart (I reuse r. That means you either hnvo tn know tho subject of clothes thoroughly or else learn It at once. You must know what kind of fab ric and what colors will best i-nmo out In the plcturos. You must find a dressmaker and a milliner who will cater to your tastes. You must Keep up with every ohunge that fash. Ion decr.cil , , You cant' afford to wear April fashions In a .Mine play. And you must often sacrifice your vanity, ami that Is one of tho worst blows. In it werd: Photoplay acting Is llko walking' on the edge of a knife; It requires ilolliao and balance. (Continued Tomorrow.) MEDFORD E L BUN John A.
