A'CrA- NELSON W. WITH Xclson AV. lAltlrit'h passes ilio ablest, leader or the old school of republican statesmen which dom inated the party and the nation's a Hail's for half a century. Aldrich himself set in the senate continuously from J8S1 to 191.1, and his power and influence was illustrated by the titlo of "general manager of the United States," which was satirically bestowed upon him. During his public life Ins leadership was unquestioned. In the senate he ranged as the greatest of parliamentar ians. Though not an orator, he participated in most de- nates aim sneciaii.eu on iariu prestige in party councils was as great as in the senate, and he was universally recognized as the representative of "big business" and "the interests." Mr. Aldrich was born in Foster, "R. I.,. November (J, 18-11. "While comparatively young, he was elected council man in Providence. In 1S75 he was elected to tho Uhode Island assemblv and four veal's later to conjrrcss. After two sessions he was elevated to the senate. 2lv. Aldrich at once displayed unusual capacity for or ganization. He applied business methods in his conduct of public affairs. As chairman of the committee on rules, and of the committee on finance, and on interstate com merce, ho wielded a powerful influence. He participated in the preparation of six revisions of the tariff, all of them "upward." He fathered the emergency currency law of 1908, and subsequently devoted much time to currency retorin. Mr. Aldrich had the fundamental latter-da v republican viewpoint. Jie considered his own judgment as enacted by his party superior to the judgment of the people, whom he never consulted and in reality held in contempt. Jn the closing days of his public career he realized his mistake and made his first trip west to overcome the growing hos tility, but found it too late. Mr. Aldrich, like many of his associates, considered he was best serving his country in serving its great corpora tions and its business interests. Their prosperity, Wall street's prosperity, was ever in his mind. In liis long public career he made no move to better humanity's con dition, but was always on the His legislative citorts were always for the dollar, never lor the man. No reflection is intended sincerity, integrity or patriotism. He was the product of conditions that obtained following the civil war period and faithfully mirrored the then existing ideals of statesman ship. It was an age of worship of the golden calf, and he never outgrew the limitation of the time, ire typified and personified the narrow aristocratic civilization of New England whose "rotten borough" he so long ably repre sented at Washington, but lie thereby lamentably failed to rank among the nation's great. He lived according to his lights, but his lights were not bright enough to shine over a nation. HIKES 10,000 MILES TO CHICAGO, April 16. Lawrence McCahan, an 18 year old Chicagoan, started on a 10,000 mile walk today in tho Interest of prohibition. COMMUNICATIONS To olho Editer: In your issue of April 13 nn article appeared under tho caption, "Con tract for Ilntilintr Gravel Let to Holmes," in which nn incorrect state merit is made. After giving the si-hedulo of bids for hauling gravel for tho county, botli by nuto trucks nnd by team stern, as presented to the county court, the nrticle Eayn: "The court offered to givo tho first throe miles to the tenmMcrs, both bids averaging $1.30, but tho team sters iiihisted upon tho entire con tract or none." This statement is incorrect in Hint tho teamsters were not offered the three-mile hnul, which offer, hail it been mndo, would Jmvo been accept ed. Commissioner Madden informed us that we could linvo tho one nnd two-mile hauls, but thero positively was no offer mndo us for tho ilireo niile haul. Wo did not accept the one nnd two-mile Iinuls because of the fact thut there is no gravel liaiiliug to do within this radius, except a few loads here nnd thero to patch up Ilio roads already inade Ho ml Su pervisor Smith mndo this fact quite clear to us, and he also mndo a sim ilar statement to tho county court in our hearing. "THE RETURN OF MAURICE DONNELLY" AT PAGE TODAY A powerful preachment against capital punishment Is the themo of "Tho Return of Maurlco Donnelly," a Vitagraph three-part Droadway star feature, one of tho features of the program at the Page Friday and Saturday. The picture visualizes tho story of a man who through circum stantial and perjured evidenco was sentenced, electrically executed and brought back to life. Leo Delanoy is seen in the chief rolo, nnd actually places himself In tho hands of an electrical expert and scientist, allow ing two million volts of static elec tricity to pass through his body. As this is the method advocates of rcsus. citation aro working on, a plcturo of tho experiment is of attractive inter est.
