SAI.KM, Or., Feb. 10. The Iioum

over Hint litis committee n a body
i not only working ngiiinst the roc

terested in better pune protection,
but thai eoitniu of its members hnvo
personal grievances ngniitst the dif
ferent fish and gnme protective itMi
ctntions, which hnvo objected to ap
pointments on the putie committee
because the appointees ndvocntod tho
abolishment of the game protection
fund.
Kills GUI's Bill
In the first place, the committee
has killed II. 11. 1(1 by Gill, which cm
braced the recommendations of the
Oregon Sportsmen's league, but has
taken one or two features of the bill
which were cood, nnd combined them
with other fentures which nre olijoo-
tionablo to sportsmen. Thev have op
ened the season for killing ducks and
geeso up to April !." in Hnrnoy, Mnl
hear nnd Lake counties. Thousand
of these birds nre breeding and linvo
nests nnd eggs hv April 1. The gnme
committee would permit the pot
hunters to hnvo full sway, for it not
only opens the season on geese during
tho nesting son-oti, but its proposed
substitute bill opens the snlo on
geese in Oregon, so that market nnd
pot-hunters enn go into eastern Or
egon, where these birds are nesting by
thousands, nnd kill them on their
nests nnd ship them to tho Portland
mnrkcls for snle.
Conflicts l-Vleriil Laws
Many of (lie open seasons ndvocat
ed by the game committee in the
house nre in direct conflict with tho
federal law for the protection of mi
grntory birds, nnd even if the other
members of the legislature fdmuld bo
deceived into voting for tho measure,
it is apparent that it could not bo en
forced because of tho federal law,
which takes precedence over the stnto
Inw.
The most siirpri-ing feature of this
substitute bill, which has been con
structed nt recent stnr chamber ses
sions of the committee, is that it puis
an end to all snlmon trout fi-hing in
tho tidewaters of nil the rivers nnd
bays of the state. These fish come
in from tho ocean in November nnd
December and can be caught only
during the winter senson. The winter
fishing for stoelhcnds, which is one
of the grcnlest nssets of the counties
along the coast, is abolished. Tho
commercial fishermen enn cnteh these
fish with nets, hut nccording to the
drastic measure framed by the gamo
committee, the anglers cannot cnlch
these fixh because nn amendment has
been slipped into this bill nbolishing
nil winter fishing for trout.
Unfair Coiiimlltco
This feature of tho hill is Baid to
be a. direct slap al the anglers from
western Oregon, because they oppos
ed the gnme committee's attempt to
abolish tho game protection fund.
Since four members of the game com
mittee Ititncr, Clark, Forbes nnd
Jones nro from cuslern Oregon, nnd
Childs, tho fifth member, has persist
ently worked ngriinst the sportsmen
and the gnme committee during this
session, nnd nt the Inst session of the
legislature those people from the wes
tern comities who nre Interested in
fair lgislation to proteet gnmn have
given up nil hopo of getting n sqiuiro
deal from the house game committee.
Rut from tho houso ilhdf different
treatment is expected.
