May 21. Lower Cnlltornin, Mexico's tsolnted peninsula, thq .coat or which the 1'nclMc licet of the fnlted Stutes I now patrollltiR, In one of the least known territories In North America. The follow Ihk facts concerning tliU arm of land, which projects about S00 miles southeasterly from the Southern border of California, were Klcn out by tho National Geographic slcloty at Washington. l. C, teday: Tho width of the peninsula varies from about 30 to more than 100 miles, and its lrrcpti:ar coast-line, over 2000 miles lonK Is bordered by numerous Islands. Doing mainly a mountainous, desert region, it Is thin ly peopled nnd presents many Miarp ly contrasting conditions, t.ow sun scorched plains, whero death by thirst awaits the traveler, lie close, to the bases of towering Rrantto peaks, "belted by forests and capped In win ter by snow; desolate plateaus oT black lavn look down on valleys seamed with sreon-bordered streams. Originally l'eopletl by Indians At the time or Its discovery In ir33 by nn expedition sent out by Cortes In search of a fabulously rich Island. It Is estimated to .have been Inhabited by 2K.00O Indians, who vlg- orousty rercnted tho, intrusion and prevented tho newcomers from Rot ting a foothold for more than a cen tury. The Jesultes then enmo In and wero wonderfully successful In ex ploring tho peninsula and establish ing missions. They established three main trails, one nloug each const nnd tho third down the middle, which serve as the regular routes of travel today. The Indians have vanished from all parts of tiielr former terri tory, except a Tew In tho extreme northern end. During the last half century all parts of the territory have been vis ited, mainly by Americans, In search of mines and other natural resources, but little or the knowledge gained has bcromo nvallablo to the public- Gold, sllvor, copper. Iron and other minerals and much fertile land have been found, but tho scarcity of water, fuel, forage, nnd tho difficulties of transportation have united with other causes to bring about failure to de velop tho resources. Climate Hot and Arid Tho climate of iiwcr California In general Is hot anfi arid. Northern conditions aro closely like thoso in adjoining parts of Southern Califor nia; In tho middle thoy are mora arid, but the extreme southern end, though arid tropical, tias more regular sum mer rains. The peninsula suffers long periods of drought, during which no rainfall sufficient to start vego tatlon occurs over largo areas for per iods of from three to fho years. Thoso dry periods may be succeeded by torrential rains, which sweep the country and roll great floods down to the sea. Surface water Is scarce and lim ited; mainly to Isolated water-holes In the, rocks or to springs from which small streams flow a short distance. Tho ItJo Santo Domingo Is tho onn living stream within tho peninsula which flows on the surfaco from Its zourco to tho sea throughout tho year. The conditions havo resulted in the development of tho richest nnd most extradordlnary desert flora In tho world. Tho bjrd and mammal life, however, Is closely related to that of Southern California. The plains abound with Bmull de sert mammals, such as rabbits, pocket mice, kangaroo rats and others. A largo number of tho smaller desort mammals never drjnk water, It, hav Ing been found ImVosslblo to teach somo of them to tnko water In cap tivity. Antelope, mountain shcop, mule-deer and mountain Hans nro tho only largo gamo animals. Tho peninsula Is thinly peopled and enormous areas remain uninhabi ted Tho most populous section is tho region south of T.a l'az, whore rains are more regolar than further north. A few small towns and widely srattnrod tommunltlcs along tho toast, with a number of villages, ranches snd minors' camps In tho In terior, cover tho population, l.owor California haa a territorial form of government, nnd, owing to Its great length, Ih divided near the middle Into n northern nnd u southern dis trict, ICnseimda and La J'az being tho respective capitals.
