. i ;" t , ' '. c V t v s i Vt. I a .w PERSIST WELL NAMED, IS IN A CLASS BY ITSELF Thirty jenrs In tlie mount nim! Vnrlv-fivo miles from the railroad. Three thousand feet aliovc sea level.- Well miRht the plnoo be colled liy the Kijinificniil 'inme of "Perisl." When Orcttiin nt n tnlo ven Mill in it twenties, when tho cont strcnnn were teeming with ehinook nnd sil-M-rcides; when the deer were as vlnutiful ns nre now the Jaek rab bits in eastern Oregon; when tho Kokiio Hiver valley was Mill without a railroad and it orchard were not yet n dream of the future nt that time two young people, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Wi'llits, quit the profession of school teaehinp and went far off into the Cascades to earve out a homo at the place now known ns Ter. hist. And their efforts have not been in vain. Mcafco of KducatloB The writer has just returned from there. He accomjihnicd Dr. George Hcbeo of the extension department of Hie University of Orecon, who earned to the people in that little mountain district fl meiie on "Twentieth Century Education." l)r. Hebeo was much impressed with the picturesque site of the Persist school, its mountain scenery, its surround injrs of tall pines and beautiful wild flowers, its tumbling streams and overhanging cliffs of reck: but most of all was he impressed with tne up-to-dato cquiment of tho bcTiooI In this little isolated mountain commu nity. Few of tho rural schools, though better located and with larger en rollment, can boast of farther ad vancement than can this little dis trict. Six pupil make up its total enrollment this year. Five of these eorao from a single home. The build ing, tho rough ou tho outside, is com fortably and neatly finished within. Itcprints of masterpieces decorate its walls. The books in the library arc well selected and number about lit!) volumes. The janitor services arc crformed by the pupils, and the money received from the district for this work is turned into books. This, with some small additions from other hources, has kept the library growln; from year to yenr. The district Is also using one of the free traveling collections sent out by the state lib , rary. Tho building is equlpjvcd with n sanitary drinking fountain and will soon have n modem heating and ven tilating system. On the grounds nre found swing, teeter, or seesaw boards, baseball and croquet out Tits. Not Always Thus Hut it was not always thus. To Mr. and Mrs. Willits were born three sons and a daughter. For some tunc after these hud grown, into school age and other families had moved into the community, the jiluco was still without n school. Hut the work of teaching was not un known to these sturdy pioneers, and so tho education of their children wag not neglected. School was ln'ld during the summer mouths "in the shade of the old apple tree." This may, at least in part, account for the fact that Merle, the youngest member of the Willits family, has be come very deeply interested In this hludy of botuuy. The surrounding eoiiutry abound with wild flowers, ferns and mosses but they hold no secrets from' him. lie studies them not only for pleas ure, but, like Jeue Stratton Porter's "Girl of the Limberloht," he turns them to profit, lleing far removed from the markets, he carries ou a until order buines. And somo day, like that "Girl of the Umuertost," lie will use the proceeds to eairy him through a school of higher cducn lion. Anyone who is interested In hn?eimens of tho flora of the Cas cades in southern Oregon will do well to correspond with hUu. rroiultiing IlotauM Although this young man Is only 3 (J yeur old, ho is a busy peison and onu with many responsibilities. Ills two older brother being away from home most of thu time, ho feels very keenly the duly of helping his father carry on thu general farm work. Hut in addition lo this and his business in floral specimens, he is assistant postmaster, 17, K. snowfall observer, librarian of the state traveling lib rary and president of the lloyn' and Girs' Industrial flub, He is handy with tools of many makes tliqse of the carpenter, the blacksmith, thu gurdeuer and the tanner, A rifle he handles with the skill of C'uoper'rt "Huwkuye." In school ho 1ms curried Ms work th rough (ho ninth grade. At limes lie feels so wrapped up in Ills iinmr diate hHTrouii'lingtf (hut lie lhluk it m III be fjul( lMiSJsl)f for lilai to NS4k MH'Uy lOIIJf fUOUMM 10 IHKO a frnti Ml Ike OrttftM Ayrleulliiral Kul m sluilml In Ml Hmtlhhw f PAGI BIX $ prfy IMuty vt Ibv wVvvJ. TUv district was first regularly organ Wed In ll)0;. Miss Pickle, a Hryu Mnwr student, now in Alaska, was the first regularly employed teacher. Tho school was then held in the home of Mr. nnd Mrs. l.cwU, second old et residents in the community. The following year a building was con structed, the same that is now being u-cd. Knrly History of School From eight to piuo .months of school are held each year, and thu progress made is equal to that hi the best nrgnnixed systems, The only fear is that those now in school will soon outgrow it. nnd there are no younger ones coming in to take their place. There isn't a .single babv in the community. The neighborhood, however, counts among its residents seven bachelors. Hence some hoK's nre entertained. While education- has been carried on in other lines, nnwic has not been overlooked. In the four families of the community there are four organs nnd two pianos, besides several string instruments. Among the lat ter is a violin Hint was brought to America from Germany over 5100 j cars ago, with the lauding of the early settlers at Jamestown. It has long been nn heirloom in the Lewis family. Hccentlv when the writer stayed over night there, ho- was given n musical treat by Mr. and Mr. Lewis nnd their three girls. The old violin played its jmrt well. Though the population of Persist is very smnll, there being only four families and seven bachelors, the people are wide awake. Social life is far ahead of what it is in many larger communities. A Parent Teachers association meets every Saturday afternoon. Once iv mouth n literary program is rendered at the school houe. Among other things, the women arc studying the IKiliticnl questions and candidate that arc confronting every voter in Oregon today. It was largely through the influ ence of this organization that Dr Rebec was brought into their midst from the State universitv. A boys' nnd girls' industrial club is alo or ganized and promises to carry off some of the laurels next full. The club's advisor, Mr. Willits, has promised the boys and girls to take them all to the county fair at Med ford in September, provided they continue to do good work in their club projects. When one realizes that this will menu a dmc of forty five miles, it can readily be seen that the offer is not a small one. ' When the Willits' first moved ontr their present home their nearest IHistoffice was Jacksomille. a dis tance of fifty-five m'les, and no roads. Xow, though Pers'st receives mail only three times a week, the daily p.i)crs of Portland and Med- fonl arc to be found among the reg ular rending matter. Many of the best weekly and monthly mngazines arc also taken. Truly it may be said that Persist is an interesting little community and one that may well bo studied with profit by many n larger place. G. A. R. TO OBSERVE DECORATION DAY Decoration day exercises will be observed on Mav .'10 by the (J. A. It of Chester A. Arthur Post and W. II.
