The suggestion is a good one and may prove valuable in interesting persons in the good roads'propagauda. It should result in the filling in of many chuekholcs and much temporary rejiair work. Perhaps it may induce some eitv people to work a little for the benefit of the country anil may n-iiH in farmers improving their own wads. Uoo-l vwuis are not built in a day. They are not built iy vommcers. j uey are tne work ot experts and cost money. Permanent improvement involves a considerable investment, an annual maintainance and a resultant higher rate of taxation. Rut the latter is more than made up bv tire reduction m the cost of transportation following the road construction. They are therefore a legitimate and iii-irvsMu. uiL'MnifiiL wr me coiummuiy. As has before been advocated in these columns, the best method of improving dirt roads is by use of the "King" split log drag, following a rain, before the earth bakes. Jackson comity has recently constructed fifty of these drags for use on the county highways, and their use should result iu much smoother and better highways. Notwithstanding improved methods of construction and simple rules for maintainance, the bulk of our road build ers remain hopelessly immune to progress and the primi tive methods of the first road bui der are still in evidence.: But each year sees improvement. Eventuallv scientific mtliods may prevail on the branch roads as thev do now on the Pacific highway. Although the work of organizing these clubs has been In progress but a short tlmj. 4363 pupils have already enrolled and applications for membership are coming In at the rato of ISO a day. There aro 10 projects In which the school children may compete, fo. prizes, the names of the projects and the number of pupils enrolled in each being as follews: Canning and preserving .... 371 Cooking and baking 563 Dairy herd record ...... ... 36 Corn raising . 3S3 Manual arts -. 266 1'lg raising ..... 13 1 Potatoes .-.. 296 Poultry -......... .... 472 Sowing. ...U.......M..1,015 Vegetable gardening . 777 Wenatchee's Fight Against Blight (From the Weatchee World., To the 1'copJc of the Wcnatchee val ley: Wc mnke this appeal to all the people of Wenntchec valley because we feel that nnything affecting the fruit industry is vital to the intcrot of nil other industries of the com munity. It is necessary that every citizen of this valley should interc-t himself and nid ill the battle against fire blight. The results of the work of the next month are more momentous than many people realize. There is enough holdover blight in some pnrtt of the Wcnatchee valley to ruin practically every orchard of the more susceptible varieties if condi tions this spring are favorable to the spread of the blight. It is a difficult thing to warn the people of the community. Most men prefer to wnit until dUa-ter stares them in the face. Mot of the fruit districts that hnve heen nearly de vastated by fire blight have" had some warning. Slowness in heeding that wanting has cot enormously. Xow is the time for concentrated effort. Nearly everywhere we go we find some holdover blight. Last c -ening in ono orchard near Cashmere in a five-minute search we found enough blight to ruin all th ur roundiug orchards. This orchard had been pruned and nppnrently wa iei in mis Minie io go turougli tne spring. This man had even cut through blight cankers with h s sa in pruning. Blight cannot bo ..tnniH'd out b nn individual. It must be community work. The blight left by one cureless grower will undo all the careful work of the ninety nud nine who are do ing their work cnrefullv. We all have loo much at tnke to let blight ruin the fniit industry of this val ley. It is not loo late if all will help. The incctor.s are trving to or- gnnize tliw alley into ro-oiwratiw blight-fighting unit. Von ns an in dividual can aid by seeing that every man attends these meetings and hel in the organization. Thi is not written ns :i scare; it is nn npHal to Wcnatchee to save herself. Wc have been in the blight work iu other section nnd hnve seen the havoc wrought by this po-f. Tli ore also applies tho principle that a hod) cannot delegate to others powers that are delegated to It. In other words, the people of the stale, the original source of authority, hav.
