Story of Tragedy
Tho body of George Dedaskalous,
a Greok. who bad resided hero tor
six years, was found under u wnre
houso along tho Southern Pacific
tracks Monday afternoon, September
23, 1912. The Saturday previously
ho had drawn out his savings from
local banks, amounting to several
hundred dollars, and Intended to
start for his natlvo land tho day his
remains woro discovered, through
tho antics of a dog.
Dedaskalous had been decoyed to
tho scene Sunday evening, his skull
fractured by blows from a loadod gai
pipe, his jugular vein severed by a
knife, his clothes torn from his body
so that his money bolt could be re
moved. Tho victim had been killed,
tho body stripped of valuables and
then dragged undor the ware house.
Evidence Circumstantial
Shirts stained with blood, tho
bloody loaded gas pipe, the knife
used, wore found in tho respective
lodgings of Spanos and Seymour, who
had been last Been with DednskaloiiB
and were from tho first suspected.
Completo circumstanclal evidence
was secured, followed by confessions
by each of tho accused men in which
tho other was accused ot tho crime,
each admitting having participated
in tho murder. These signed con
fessions wero repudiated at the trial.
According to tho confessions mado,
details of which wero aftorwards
verified by tho police, several hours
wero spent in enticing Dedaskalous
Into a secluded place. Ho was In
duced to como by tho promise of
meeting a woman. While ostensibly
waiting for her, Seymour secured a
water melon. As Dedaskalous was
eating a allco, ho was struck over the
head from behind by Seymour and
knocked Insensible. Spanos then re
peatedly clubbed tho insensible man
and cut his throat to mako sure of
death.
Who Murderers Wero
Spanos was a Greek aged about 22,
who married a woman twlco his ago,
secured hor money, and squandered
it. He was accused ot practicing
whito slavery among tho Greeks but
escaped conviction. Seymour was n
half-brood Mexican and a sexual per
vert. Both woro suspected of tho
murdor of Nathan Rogoway, a hide
buyor of Albany, who mysteriously
disappeared during tho winter of
1911-12 and whoso remains wero
found near Ashland the following
spring. Seymour admitted guilty
knowledge of this crime.
