I i PXGE SIX, MTCDFOttD MATT, TRTRTTNR MIUDFORD. OK1WON", MONDAY, OOTOWTR 27, 19W. NEWS OF THE ORCHARD TRADE TRYING 10 LOW PRICES OF LI ST YEAR ENLARG E BOX FRUIT MARKET NKW Y01UC, Oct. 27. Tho low prices of Inst year, n heavy Huropoan ami South American demand, gen eral disgust with tho barreled ap ples ot tho cast, nml n light crop In most fruit-growing sections aro tho fundamental reasons for tho present good prices for Northwestern apples In New York markets. Tho fact that tho first shipments of Hood Hirer 3plt7cnnorgK brought at auction $2.35 to 3.2S a box and Wenntchco Ar kansas Hindis from $2.50 to $3,00 at this crucial time, when al tho ap ples that aro not to bo put In cold stornno nro being thrown on tho mar ket, Is n strong Indication that tho present demand tor hlgh-grado west ern apples will continue throughout tho Bcason. At tho Brio Tier, nn nvorngo of nearly 100 cars of bar reled apples Is received each day. Most ot these aro for Immediate con sumption, and wilt not bo put into cold storage When they nro gono the market for tho boxed apple will Improve steadily, is tho general pre diction. IiirrcaM tlio Demand Mouths which never before had tasted boxed apples had their fill last winter. Tho enormous crop pro duced throughout tho United States, with tho resultant low prices sent boxes of high grade fruit into thous ands ot homes for tho first tlnio. The grower Is reaping a direct benefit from tho generous prices ot last fall. Tho fruit brokers of New York placo low prices of 1912 as a prlmo factor in the increased demand for boxed fruit. Five years ago, Scobel & Day sent tho first box of apples to South America from New York. It was a single box, sent as a sample. The Vundyfco, which left recently for Uuenos A) res and Illo Janeiro, car ried 34,000 boxes ot northwestern apples. Now that tho tariff Is to bo removed from meat, tho steamship companies aro Increasing their cold storago capacities for the purpose ot bringing meat north and taking ap ples and other fruit south. , South American Demand Tho demand for apples from tho South Americans, who aro now hav ing their early spring weather, is not nearly supplied. Their supply Is regulated by tho cold storago capac ity of tho shps. Until the Vandyko was built, no ship going to South America had cold storago facilities for more than 10,000 boxes. At tho present tlmo tho fruit merchants who supply this trade aro engaging spaco In tho boats for next August. The growing demand for northwestern apples in Argentina, Brazil and other South American countries, and tho increased cold storago facilities In tho ships that ply trado In theso waters aro factors In tho creation ot tho present favorablo market condi tions and one that will bo a perma nent nnd growing one. lloguo 1th cr l'cars Colorado Jonathans, which were much in ovldonco In tho ovcrfloodcd market at this tlmo last full, aro not to bo found. Tho commission houses aro lined with brightly labeled boxes from tho Wenntchco, North Yakima, Iloguo Itlvcr and Hood River valleys. There has been an Immenso ship ment ot Jonathans from Washington to Now York. There aro but few Jonathans from tho Hood lllver and Itoguo lllver valleys in tho Now York market, but Spltzonbcrgs from tho former district aro just putting in an appearance. Southorn Oregon pears aro found !u every high-class fruit stand in tho city and aro retailing at from C to 8 centB aplcco, according to quality. , Crops Kierynlicrc Short Colorado Is not tho only fruit dis trict that has n light crop. Califor nia's customary supply of Yellow Nowtown Plpplus Is reported to be greatly diminished by tho fruit growing conditions there. Now York, Malno and other eastern states huvo but half tho crop ot 1912. Tho Chicago markets aro taking all tho apples grown in tho middlo wnst, leaving the western-grown fruit to supply tho needs that small crops in the east and Europe and tho liking for tho product is causing. Prices given by buyers in Now York for upples f. o. b. in tho Wenntchco, North Yakima, Hood River and Rogue River valloys aro ros follews: Rome neautles, $2. CO; Spltzeubprgs, $1.00 to $2; Yellow Nowtown Pippins, $1.50 to $2; Ar kansas rJlacks,$2; Jonathans, f 1.40 $1.00; Winter Bananas, $2.2S-$3; WJuesaps, 'f 1.70-I8. APPLE BROKERS SAY APPLE PRICES.
