Tbo cover nnr'it mewMigo read: "As you vrcro previously advised, the rkssaRO of tbo Tbompvm bill will prevent tbo atato from securing, title to several thousand acres of land, which should bo sold for tbo benefit of tbo common school fund. "Inasmuch aa your honorable body hna just passed bllU appropriating about I7GO.O0O for the support of our state. Institutions of higher education. I feel that I may tako the liberty of npeattlns a word In behalf of tho Uttlo country school, with tho hop that when you return to your constituents It cannot ba said that, while you icare the Institutions of blKber education evcrytblns they asked In tho way of appropriation you refused to cred tend a protecting hand to tbo common nchool fund, and tho Uttlo red school- bouse, whea about to bo raided by a grasping corporation." Westerlund and Reamea voted for tho repeal, Carklnwlth tho "ma chine" against It. ARMORY TO BE ONLY $50,000 STRUCTURE That the proposed armory for ifed ford, if the boud issue carries, will be n $50,000 structure instead of an $80,000 ono seems probable accord ing lo word from Rep. Wcslcriund at Salem. The bill as it now stands in the hands of tbo ways and means committee calls for $25,006 to be raised by tbo city of Mcdford and county of Jackson, the state to pay nn equal amount. This will mean the bond election will call for $12,500 instead of $20,000 but it in not thought any change in tbo election call will bo necessary as the call Mates the bonds shall not exceed $20,000 and does not fix the amount at that figure. HADCLIFF. Dated Feb. 1. 1913. AN APPEAL TO THE FARMERS AND FRUIT GROWERS OF THE ROGUE RIVER VALLEY To the Fanners ami FmltitrowcrM of ihu Horuo II Ivor vutley: .Sirs: Tho umlorHlfnunl ImmUh, doing uMiincHs nt Mcdford, Or,, fool n deep lutorcst in the proposed construction tuut completion of Ihu Kokuo lllver Valley oiutnl .system, It is our Iden and opinion thnt tlio Koguo liivcr vnlloy can only bo inndo to renoh Its maximum pro ductivity by an olitbornto nnd oomprchonsivc xystcm of Irrigation. It is probablo that nt this tUio not to exceed oncthlrd of thn land, mill joct to cultivation, is orop prodiu'inft, and that tho land that Is oven under the most intensive cultivation dors not produce to exceed 50 per cent of it.s produutivc. capacity with water. Tho ItoKue lllver valley, tinder irritation, Is capable of producing and supporting, a population in excess of 100,000 people. This can never be reached, however, unless water Is put uiwut our lands. The plan proposed by tho Hokuo lllver Valley Canal company Is an elaborate and comprehensive system of Irrigation. It means, with the completion of tho l'aiiuiim canal, that there will ho attracted to the Italy of tho Pacific the small farmer who will want to till, culti vate and caro for five and teii-aerc tracts. It means to the owner of land who is anxious to sell Ills acres ami retire that it will ho pos sible in the near future to find a purchaser therefor. Tho completion of tho irrigating canal menus the distribution among the icoplo of the lioguo lllver valley for labor and merchandise within tho next two years, a million dollars or therealiontii, and It means lucrca-sod efficiency and prosperity along every line. For this reason we deem' it most essential that every land owner owning land under the pro posed irrigation system immediately take advantage of this opportun ity to bring prosperity to the Uonc liivcr valley, ns well as himself, by signing the water contract offered by tho lloguc lllver Volley Canal company. Wo deem it a fair contract and ncc no reason why a land owner should not sign it if he really wants to bring prosperity to this beautiful valley, whether he wants to become a producer or sell his lauds to someone who does. In either event he 'will be bene fited by signing at once, so that the system may be completed this year. We therefore cheerfully nnd heartily commend the proved pro ject to all of our customers and dcwsttors and laud owners as worthy of the moht careful and thoughtful consideration. If there be any one who is desirous of a personal interview looking to the betterment of the farmer and fruitgrower of the Iloguo liivcr valley, to such the time of the ulfdcrsifined will be cheerfully given.
