Pears and Pear Culture in the Valley (By Reginald Parsons.) For over fifty yearn Roguo river valley has been producing pears which now, for flavor, size and keep ing quality, are known tho world over. In fact, ho favorably kuown Is this luscious fruit and so much sought after is it, that people arc willing to pay almost any price In order to have tho opportunity of par taking of its dollclous flavor. Tho figures reached In this regard ex ceed those of any other kind of tho deciduous varieties. Thrco times one of our orchards has reached the world's record jirlcex, while others in this valley liavo had their turn as well. The maximum price being $10.08 pur box for tho average of an cntlro car of 50 1 boxes. Jrttv J'liieht Pi'iirx Wo can therefore well say that the Roguo. river valley gtows tho finest pear kuown to tho prescut world. The re.iKons for this success aro sev eral, chlof of which, however, aro tho climatic and soil conditions which aro conducive to sizo, delicacy of fla vor and u wonderful keeping quality, Somo varieties, such ns tho Cornice, D'AnJou, uml Winter Nells, not bolng finally consumed until in February, tho time of picking being tho month of Soptembor preceding this, making posiblu u consuming period of four months, a wonderful showing consid ering tho naturally perishable qual ity of this kind of fruit In tho softer varieties und when grown under less Xavorablo conditions und surround ings. While tho pear has grown in this valley for to many yeuru and tree specimens can bo found here and there- showing considerable age, the Industry of growing tho pear for com mercial purposes is comparatively now, It Is only during tho past ten years that any showing bus been inado on these lines and during tho last five years that tho marvelous rnsults liavo been obtained. Sturtlng as it did experimentally, us It wore, and in tho facu of some opposition and scorn by tho old-tlmo settlor who ridiculed tho Idea of growing (no thing but grain, alfalfa and stock, the Industry has now becomo tho chief factor In tho growth anil up building of this promising and so ductlvo valley, rich us it Is In other agricultural croyu, in mineral de posits and timber lands; numbering as it does now its shipments to do mestic and foreign ports in hundreds of carload lots. A few years will see those hundreds change to thousands, owing to the rapidity with which tho bmrlng trees, aro Incrensiog constant-1 ly the annual yield, thu coming Into bearing of trees moro recently plant ed and the great increase of acreage In pear trees blng planted each year The maximum area suitable for planting Is far from being reached, as evidenced by tho thousands of acres which llu still untouched. Soil SfUttlnii It must not bo supposed, howeror. that pear trees will grow, flourish aud produce the highest grade of fruit in all kinds and depths of soil's. Caro must always bo exercised In se lecting heavy, deep, rich soil and well drained. It tho best results aro de manded. Of course, many of the pests sre so small that they cannot be seen with the miked rye, nml In such esses the microscope Is brought Into use. Although tho office was created primarily fur the fruit grower, it nevertheless, renders assistance to those who are engaged In other lines of agriculture Fur Instance, the al falfa grower Is able to get alfalfa seed lusted for purity, percentage of germlmitlnu. etc. He Is nlso given Information In the matter of alfalfa diseases. In this connection. It mny bo said that the pathologist's office first published on the Crown (Jail dis ease of alfalfa. Potato growers aro taught how to produce clean tuber by carefully treating thn. seed. They aro also told how nml when to spray potntnu.i, how to Irrigate ns well as the best varieties to plant in this dis trict. The same tuny be said of nil other crops which aro grown for pro fit lu tho young orchards before thuy conic Into bearing. lIsluMMitil In iimo The offlco of thn pathologist uml entomologist was established In I 'J 10, and Is tho outgrowth of tho work which wan done by Professor P.
