COOK AND GREEN ROD W UK Ti RADETOMEDFORD Upon request from Governor West tho forent flerviro lfns allotted $1, OOO from a email fund at tlicir com lnaud for the construction of n rood to the Cook innl Green l'nsa in the Rojnio river Klamath river divide. Thin will completes a waon rond by menus of which ono enn leave Med ford nnd travel over a very Reed rond to tlio top of (lie divide in the Klntnnth watershed. Tlio question of constructing a roud from Seind vnlley to tlio same piiHH is being nctivcly taken up with n very good prospect, that, with the iiRMHtaneo which the forest herviee may bo nblo to givo during tlio nest fit-cal year, it will bo constructed. Such n rond would afford a better outlet for Happy Camp, Seind valley mid other territory tributary there to, than is now hnd over the present wagon road to llornbrook or Yrekn, California. Tlio proposed rond will' bu quite an easy grade, can be trav eled a Inrgo portion of the year and will, incidentally bring a large amount of trndo to Medford and tho surrounding countrj' which now goes to northern California. The inter ested settlers and miners in vivinity of Cook and Green Pass have shown their desire for the road by agreeing to contribute in money nnd labor any amount in excess of that furuished by the font service, which is nec essary. The people aro all very cn- uMnstic over tho proposed road and it is believed that its construction will be of great assistance to the country reached. In addition, tho forest bo nice has nllotcd (GOO towards the construc tion of a road up Anderson creek, which willbo of material benefit to a number of Ecttlcrs residing in that lwrtion of Jackson count'. Tho pco ))o aro extremely interested in see ing this road put through and have ngrml to coporeato in its construc tion to tho extent of an equal amount with tho forest sen-ice. It will ex tend from, tho end of tho present wagon road on tho Little Applegatc river side and connect with the road on Anderson Creek above Talent, and vrill give direct connection between Talent and the Little Applegnfe val ley. The forest service is desirous in so far as the funds nt its com mand penuit, of securing mean of communication between t-etllera with in Ihu bounds of tho forest. Can you bcut it!" SANTA ANA THUG NOT JOE MATLOCK SHOWN BY WEST SALEM, Ore., Dec. 23. A hott time ago Governor West gave out n list nhowing the elos in which each county would bo if his plan for uni fying oiunly salaries is put into ef fect by enactment of tho legiMalurc, and today he gave out figures show ing tho method of arriving at the classification of the counties. His idea N that tho present hnp hnxard method of fixing snlaries of county officials should be displaced by a plan that will make the salary of every county official eorrosHnd to tho salary of the same official in every oilier county in the same elnsi in tho state. Thus all clerks in counties of the second class would receive the same salaries, nnd sher iffs in those counties would voceivc like salaries, and so on through the list of county officials. Method of Classification mis classification ot counties is made according to the area, assiscd valuation and population of the coun ties. At the head of the list alpha betically is Baker county. Its area is 3,174 per cent of tho total area of tho state; its assescd valuation is 2, 520 per cent of the assessed valua tion of the entire state; its popula tion is 2,087 per cent of the popula tion of tho state. This makes an av erage of 2,703 per cent of tho total area, assessed valuation and popula tion of the state, and according to tho schedule arranged, places Baker county in tho fourth class. Baker comity is cited to illustrate how the governor has figured to plnce impartially each county in its proicr classification. Mu'tnomah county stands by far in a class by itself, and is given clnss one. The other counties whose average runs from 4 to 5 per ccut nrc placed in the second clam, from 3 to4 per cent in me tuini class, irom - to J per cent in the fourth class, and less than 2 per cent in the fifth clnss. .Multnomah Salaries About Itlglit With tho counties thus classified, it will be for the legislature to fix the salaries, beginning say with tho counties of the fifth class and in creasing them proportionately on up through the scale until the counties of tho second class arc reached. The salaries in Multnomah county prob ably would not be disturbed or would bo fixed separately. Tho governor haa compiled the fol lowing figures showing the classifi cation of the ceunties: Tfc Dully Hint from IVrla. 1 I . blHnflfll t&v mfttMm ?H - auMinrtir r Mil' iiuto TMlor md suits nrc drrd thli wlnttr.
