Tho plans to prevent llryan from rapturing tho convention arc now well under way, according to tho Murphy followers. Tho commltteo named Urey Wood son, as temporary secretary of the convention and John I. Martin us temporary sergcant-at-arma. He replied: "I will rise In my place and an nounce to the convention that I will have no part in tho couvontlon which does business with a roll tainted with this kind or fraud." "Will you Icavo tho hall?" ho was next asked, "I will not say that," Hadley answered. Governor Hadley argued against holding tho convention until the credentials committee report had been received and acted upon. He contended that tho position of thoso who were fighting tho "tainted roll" would be stronger than ever It opportunity was given tho con vention to remove tho questioned delegates. No Itoom For Compromise Replying to this point, Roose velt's ndherontB stated that over tures hud ben made by tho opposi tion, seeking compromise on tho basis of seating tho Roosevelt dolo gatlnus from California, Washington and part of Texas, Colonel Roosovolt cut short con Kderatlou of such n proposition as serting that there was no room for compromlso on matters of principle, and that the very fact that certain peoplo wore disposed to dlckor was a very good reason for repudiating what ho said was the whole fraudu lent proposition. Colonel Roosevelt Immediately be gun preparation If n long formal Htatemout to be distributed in prlntod form to everyono of his delegates, outlining his reusous for tho momentuous step. Tho colonel decided that there Hlimild he a mooting of two reprcnent ullvts from each Ktato Koosevelt dele gation this afternoon to miip out ,i plan of future action to ho followed it the convention, As a delegate of tho KnnsuB HoobovoH forces expressed it, "This conference will likewise consid er propositions from the Tnft camp t lut t they return a part of tho btokn fcomls." . -, ' sit m judgment. Nothing tlmt this committee iiiuv do is entitled to consid oration and in con-idering what they will do it will he well to keep in mind the remark made in private by one of the national committeemen, who when asked why they had stolen so many more delegate than were needed for their ptirp'-e, answered that it would enable the credentials committee to make a show of generosity in seating -nine, while retaining a number amply sufficient to accomplish the cuds they sought. 'Moreover, it U well to remember that tho fraud is eipmlly grent and emtally responsible, whether the fraudulent delegate.- actually vote on the nomination or whether they are merelv u-ed to create a situation which renders it unnecessary for thorn to vote on the nomination for president. If the roll is not purged en masse of these fraudulently elected dolegnt-.'s the whole action of the convention is tainted. "The committee on rules has just, against the protest of the progressive members, provided for the perpetuation of the national committcu in the form resHjiisiblo for tiie scandalous outrages which have at this moment brought the republican party to the breaking ixiiut and they have explicitly lefused to recognize the principle of another presidential primary and have made the national committee supreme over the people in tho inatlur of piimaries. "Unfortunately, in our political life, the unscrupulous man who com mits wrongs such as these, can usually count on Inning soiuo rospccluble men support him and other rcspcWablc uion opiso him, hut cease tlmir opposition nt the point when it would become really effective. In this convention the unscrupulous men who also are the leaders have already leecived support from the former class of rosHictablc men; and they count on seeing representatives of tho latter class, who have hitherto voted cgainst them, fear to take the decisive step of severing connection with tho fraudulent convention itself. "Such are the facts about the national convention iih now constituted. I decline any longer to be bound by any action it may take, I decline to regard as binding any nomination it may make. J do not regard successful fraud and deliberate political theft as constituting a title to party regularity, or a claim to the support of any party. "I hope that the honestly elected majority will at unci! insist upon the immediate purging of the roll in its entirety and not piecemeal, by the con vention. If this purging is not accomplished, 1 hope the honestly elected delegates will decline all further connection with a convention whose action is now determined and lias hitherto liceu determined by a majority whi'di is made a majority only by tho action of fraudulent delegates whom the lonvcntion has refused to strike from the rolls. "If tho loaders of the liouoatly elected majority disagree with me in this mutter and wish for any cause to defer for the moment this action, then I moat ea mostly hope that at least they will insist upon voting on the cases of those fraudulent delegates eu bloc and not separately. We cannot afford to pardon u thief on condition that lie surrenders hull' the stolen goods. "If the honestly elected majority of tho convention cIioomi to proceed with tho business and to nominate me us the candidate of the republican party, I shall accept. If some fear to take such a stand nnd tho icmaiudur choono to inaugurate a movement to nominate me for the piesidoucy as a progressive on it progressive platform and if in such event the general feeling among progrcss'iNcs favor my being nominated, 1 shall accept. In cither case I shall make my appeal to every honest oitixeu in tho nation; and I shall light the campaign through, win or lose, even if I do not get a single electoral vote. "I do not wish ,t single man to support me from personal feeling for me, I have nothing to offer any man; nuy man who supports mo will do t-o without hope of gain, and at the lisk of personal loss and discomfort. Hut if, having this in view iho-e fervent in thoir great fight for the rule of the people and for social and industrial justice, wheh hu now become a clear-cut fight for honesty against dishonesty, fraud ami theft, desire mo to lead the fight, T will do so. There can be no cause for which it is belter worth while to tight; none in which it is of less conoo, uouco what happens to the individual himself, provided only that he valiantly does his duly in tho iorward movement. t "I shall make my appeal to honest men, oast and west, north nnd south nnd gladly take the result, whaleer that result may he.
