She told them that she had been married. This statement was true hut she did not tell them that It was to a Chinaman who kept her locked In a room In Chinatown until sho bad become a slave of the drug. Then ho sold her to a Chinnman nt Port land. Sho was taken to various cities in the northwest nnd recently she ran away. Sho came to Ashland In search of work and there she met Jim Ling, the Chinaman accused of stabbing Wo Leo In this city at the laundry last Sunday morning. The craving for tho drug was on Viola Miller and she easily fell into Jim Ling's power. He brought her to Medford and to the den on tho banks of Bear creek. Sho spent n portion of her time at tho Royal lodging house. But over so often tho craving for the drug led her back to the den. Tells of the Assault. On last Sunday night she left tho Royal lodging house about 1 o'clock and went to the laundry. Her mas ter, Jim Ling appeared on the scene and demanded money of her. 'Sho declared that she had but ?2 and that she was sick and needed it. He then drew a knife on her, according to her story, and threatened to kill her. Sho fled and sought refuge with Wo Leo. Then sho declared Jim Ling entered Wo Leo's room and drew a knfe. As she fled sho de clares sho saw Jim Ling plungo tho knife at Wo Lee. We Lee's stqry as told on the wit ness stand Tuesday afternoon In the Justice's court did not correspond with that of the woman. He says he was alone in the room when Jim Ling entered and demanded money. As the complaint filed against Jim Ling only specified assault with at tempt to kill, tho matter of a subse quent robber was not gone into. It Is a consensus of opinion that tho two men quarreled over the earnings of the woman. Woman Unnerved. Tho fact that the woman was badly unnerved by being kept away from the influences of the drug and the fact that Wo Leo does not under stand English very well mny account In some degree for the differences In their stories.
