SELLING'S FAKE NO ONE can doubt for a Collier's Weekly, or its cies. Here is how it views the senatorial sit tuition in Ore Ore eon: "Senator .Jonathan Bourne of Oregon is opposed for reelection by Ben Celling of Portland. A circular letter sent bv Air. Selling to the voters of Oregon contains this sentence: " llo (Senator Hournol is Identified more with tho claw of 'Aldrleh ropubltcnim than any other republicans, while ho claims to ho a pro gressive.' "This sentence makes Mr. Selling an easy man to classify. Either he is too ill-informed a man to represent any community in any legislative body or else and, un happily, one is compelled to accept this as the more prob able assumption he is willing to use a palpable falsehool to further his own political fortunes. Few men in the senate have a better title to the term Progressive than' Mr. Bourne. With probably one exception, he has done more than any other man to further progressive measures. In doing so he has only been consistent with the character of the community he represents. It is well within the truth to say that no single act in the immediate future would be such a calamity to the Progressive cause or give so much hilarious joy to the Standpatters as the repudiation of Senator Bourne bv his constituents in Oregon. Oregon has done powerful and impressive things for pregress: it can now do an equally spectacular thing against pro gress. But no reasonable person behoves it will. All the old guard of stand-patters are tapping Sel ling's barrel and helping him in his campaign for the nom ination not because thev like .Jonathan less, seek revenge for Ins part in sterili.mg (hem. Even if they succeeded in nominating Selling, most of them will be found voting for Harry Lane., for they have little use for the purveyor of pants. NO ROOM FOR TILE Southern Pacific railroad has set a good example by promptly discharging an employe for "knocking" the country. It seems that a new arrival wired home that he was so pleased with the Rogue river valley that he intended to make it his home, whereupon the employe tried to discour age him. One day recently a trainman endeavored to pei-suade a tourist not to stop over .here. It was one of many re ported instances. The complaint filed will effectually stop such actions. The Southern Pacific is spending hundreds of thous ands of dollars advertising this section. It would be folly to permit their own employes to undo the work they are trying to do at so great an expense. Everyone should follow the railroad's examnle -and discharge any employe who munity or ousmess. The business men. of the licity hinds to attract people. anyone about who endeavors to nullity this publicity work. There should be no room for the knocker, find' no em ployment for him. If he docs not like the country, let him pass on into the oblivion from which he emerged. Only the unclean bird fouls its own nest. Money and Finance ii. (By E. L. McClure.) Unanswerable arguments have been promulgated showing that tho nation's credit can be utilized for the Issue of a superabundance ot sound money secured by the total wealth of the nation, and automatically regu late money supply to equal money demand by interchanging bonds for money or money for bonds, which would maintain equilibrium In money supply the desldoratum for a flxod and unchangeable measure of value. It would necessitate exact ac counting with each note and bond, as perfect bookkeeping as banks provide for bills payable and bills receivable. A default In the payment of any noto at maturity would destroy confidence In the value of rnonoy as certainly as failure to pay a depositor's check would dlhcredlt a bank. If tho gold sup ply could be made certain, so that confidence could bo maintained un dlsturbod, any old thing as a substi tute for money would circulate with out question so long as there was no doubt that it could be exchanged for gold on doinaud. nut once ralso a doubt, the fact would soon become a certainty, and at once nothing but gold would pass at par until confi dence was restored. It Is noticeable that uono of tho writers advocating tho "Aldrleh plan" question the gold standard, and studiously avoid any mention of the standard of value. The Impotence of central banks was strikingly demonstrated by the capitulation of tho strongest of them all when Germany was compelled to abandon tho demonstration against Frnnco In Morocco.
