Speed of Wind and Airship When Turn Is Attempted. LOS AXQBLB5. Cal., Jan. 23. "Poor Pa;o evidently failed to re member n cnrdinal principle of flying when he attempted to make the turn that resulted in liis death, by failing to increase his momentum to the com bined speed at which he was travel -in nnd the estimated wind velocity before nttempliii; to make tlw turn." This was Glomi Curti.-s' explana tion today of tho fntnl accident to Aviator liutherford Page at Domin guw field, wliioh oat a pall over the third dny's sjwrt of the Los Angeloe aviation moot. "Unless the rule I mentioned is complied with strictly," Curtiss added, "disaster is certain. The only preventative is fjiififioiont altitude to gather the neeQssary momentum, should a fall ensue. Page was too low to attempt the turn he did." Page was 2-1 years old. He was a member of a New York family, said to bo wealthy, nnd a 10 graduated from Yale witli Jho class of 1012. TO SECURE A PARDON OREGON, 111., Jan. 23. Hoiiing for a pardon after which he declares he will devote tho rest of his life to benefiting humanity, Dr. Harry Web ster, who killed his wife to oeeupe going to prinon for bigamy, waB to dny taken to Joliet prison to begin a lifo sentence. His parents accom panied him to tho station. "I am ready to pay the penalty," Webster said, before being taken aboard tho train, "llul it's a hard blow to my rolativos. I know I have Kiinicd, but I oould do nothing else. I suppose I killed the woman bceaiiMO I wanted Ymo Varnoy. Without her lifo is not worth living. I'm a vio time of circumstances, and hope that the woild will realize nod understand. If 1 am pardoned, I shall devote my Jife to Immunity." NORTHWESTERN TO INVADE PORTLAND TERRITORY? v .PORTLAND, Jan. 23.-The pres ence of William Gardner, pioidont of tho ChieuKo NorthwoBtcrii railway, Jins rovived tho rump rlhnt tho line iij prupnrhif,' to carry out it oft re peated threat to invado this terri tory. t Agents of tjio company, it ip said, linvo been very aulivo recoutly ajid nro reported to ho negotiating for tcjmiunl fuoililios on (ho east ido of tho Williuiiotto river. President Gardner is espeoted to txriixc in 1'orlluud eoon, AVIATION KLIl A NEGLECTED INDUSTRY. GENERAL Freight Agent Lonnsbnrr of (ho Southern Pacific states that he is to uiulortake a campaign to promote the poultry industry in Oregon, lie states, and has the figures to prove his assert ion, that in no section are natural conditions nioro favorable for poultry and that what ought to he one of the state's groat industries is strangely neglectud. Railroad records show that overy section of Oregon imports eggs and most sections chickens, turkeys and other fowl all sending money out of Oregon that should remain hero. Portland alone imports two hundred cars of eggs a year nt of from the east, aii average of four cars each week. Here is n market for all the eggs likely to bo raised in the state for many years. !Medford ast year imported three carloads of eggs from the east, besides probably twice or thrice this quantity in loss than carload lots, by express, etc. uuring tue year ten cars ol dressed pounry wore shipped into Portland from eastern states. This poultry ought all to have been raised here. Most of the poultry and "eggs shipped into Oregon are from the middlo west states, so favorable for poultry as they are in Oregon. If the farmers of cyclone and blizzard swept Nebraska can raise chickens and eggs, and pay freight for 2000 miles to mar ket at a profit, surely the Oregon farmer can profitably supply the Oregon market. No place in Oregon is more favorably situated for the poultry industry than the Rogue river valley. No climate is more desirable, and in no place do chickens, turkeys and water fowl do better. But little capital is required. It would seem that here is a neglected industry suitable alike as a side issue for orehardisfc and farmer as well as for tho poultrv fancier.
