(Continued from Pajjo One) bandits bonrded tho tniin nnd man aged to conceal themselves in the mnil enr ns it nulled out of Red Bluff. One of the mail clerk helpers -was to get off the train nt Hcd Bluff and take train No. 14. He was forced back into the car under the cover of a bandit's euu and ordered to take the ropes from the mouths of the mail sacks. Then ho was forced to bind the other two mail clerks hand and foot. The bnudits examined the ropes securinc tho two bound men and ndjustod several knots that were not tied tight enough to suit them nud then bound the mail clerk who bad done their work for them. Six of the registered mnil bags were then slit up tho sides and the contents gone through. The bandits worked deliberately but swiftly, si lently und apparently had timed their every move. They had little to say to tho mail clerks, shaking only when necessary, and then imperatively enough to impress the railroad men that resistance meant n bullet. Tut Off Mull. Ab tho train passed Cottonwood, one of the men, who had dragged the Cottonwood mnil to the chute, 6hot it out nnd dragged in the one for tho train. The same was done nt Ander son. When the train pulled into Redding tho victims were htill bound. Their faces had been turned to the wall of tho car in order thnt hoy might not see the point at which the bnndits left tho train. The clerks are certain, howovor, that one of the robhors did not got out until tho train wns pulling into Redding station, and policemen there corroborated this statement, snying they saw tho louo robbor run toward tho rear of the train on the far side from tlii'in. Description of Men. Redding polico immediately bognn a search of the town for suspects who would answer the description given bv the mail clerks. The descrip tions follew: Bundit No. 1 Weight 1(50 pounds; clean shaven, ruddv face; light slouch m(, bluu nori;c suit; about U5 years of age, Uandit No. 'J Weight about 100 pounds; about Ji feet, 7 iuclios in height; clean tdutveu; wore a cowboy hill; reddibh cptuploxioii and wore u reddish colored box overcoat. The first bandit in declared to have left tho car at Redding. It is not definitely known whoro tho second mini got off, but ho U also supposed to have come into Redding. SOMK thirty-five or forty million dollars in gold was produced by the Jaokson county placer mines in days gone by. Since then there has been a steady annual out put of gold, not large, but in proportion to the number of men engaged in it, more wealth has been produced than produced by any other industry in the county. In no other country that we know of are there so many rich surface prospects. Despite the many "pockets" and "chimneys that yielded their wealth with scarcely any erfort or capital on the part of the prospector, there has been little systematic development or scientific mining. Yet there is hardly a place under the sun where conditions are more favorable to the miner, where he can mine the year around without' discomfort, where there is water power and timber in abundance. Up to a few years ago, the only prospecting done was for gold for pockets of gold. lMhe grass roots did not yield gold, work ceased. As a result there are only a very few mines upon which extensive development work has been done much of it bv wildcatters, much of it by ama teurs, much of it useless and wasted. Lately some pros pecting has been done in certain localities for other metals than gold but the count rv has bv no means been pros pected. No region contains so inanv varieties of metal as south ern Oregon. There are extensive deposits of a score ol different kinds, any one of which would pay for develop ment. Mining men of experience assert, and back up their assertions with proof, that this is destined to be a great copper district that it is really a copper rather flian a gold countrv that the ore bodies are extensive and rich and yet in spite of rich prospects, only a few have had any development work done upon them. Minerals are perhaps the greatest resource of the country the greatest and the most neglected. The day will come when the mines will receive the recognition that is their due. It is to speed this day that the mining con gress is to be held in Medford next month. Alining is the "one best bet for the Kogue river val ley at this time. If half of the energv is spent in its de vclopment that has been spent in developing horticulture, it will receive the recognition it is entitled to and the valley will come into its own. The time is ripe for a great mining boom. There has been none in the country since the collapse of the Nevada excitement. No place offers the opportunities of southern Oregon there is every reason whv we should all pull to gether and by bringing miners here, showing them what wc nave to otter, mvitc the needed capital to unlock our vast mineral wealth. IF Postmaster General Hitchcock's recommendations to the Hughes commission should he adopted hy congress, thousands of publishers will have to ko out of business. Mr. Hitchcock has made an excellent record for econ-1 omy. He has eliminated much waste. He has chopped off man' sinecures. However, while very active against publishers, particularly of so-called much-raking and anti Taft magazines,, he hasn't done a thing to stop the most rlagrant gratt of all the excessive charges by railroads for the use of mail care and earning mail. The govern ment is paying several times the amount that express companies are tor similar service. Mr. Hitchcock holds that a newspaper should he made to carry as much reading as advertising or lose its second class franchise; that premiums, clubbing offers, contests and special inducements should be stopped; that a limit should be placed upon the amount of fiction published; that supplements should be eliminated, and that publica tions owned by a house having some other business should oe denied the second class privilege. Some of these recommendations are reasonable enough. Premiums, etc., could be stopped with profit to the pub lisher, but the volume of news, advertising and fiction adjust themselves, and it is none of Mr. Hitchcock's busi ness how much of each papere carry. If not proportioned rightly, the public will not support 'the publication. DON'T FAIL TO VOTE. DON'T fail to register your vote for presidential choice with The Mail Tribune. The polls will close at mid night January 12 so that the result can be announced in Saturday's paper. So far La Follettc leads, with Koosevelt second. Bryan leads the democrats, but only a few democrats have voted. The straw vote is an exceedingly interesting one, as affording an index to public sentiment in southern Ore gon at the present time. Tho reason for this is probably that on account of tho scale, and soot on tho sides of tho pot morn surface Is created; and furthermore, this residue may act as a wick, This action must not ho confused with what t alt oh place when an arrester Js used. Tho snot arrester materially reduces tho area of thu binning uurfneo by uctlng as a cov'-t. How Iho Halo of Ituiiilng Is Obtained, ( Everyone ho has hud any experience with orchard heating rorpgnlzoH tho fact that r-r certain types of orchard heaters tho jato at which tho fuel Is consumed Is not uniform. This Ik particularly true of nil lard pall types, whether they luivo porforatloiiH about tho, upper rim or not, or whether -they have a con tor draft, as is tho case with tho Troutmaii heritor. Tho greater the ratio of tho depth to the dliimoter of tho pot, tho less uniform tho huriifrfc rnlo. So far tho writer has pot hooii any Utontturo which bears directly upon this subject. It hns always boon taken for gtautod that there Is little or no difference In Iho amount of hunt given oft by a heater whether the ol is burning nt tho top or bottom, it In an easy thing to get tho average burning tlmo, nmf this Is about nil that ban over been given In tho bulletins und papers published on orchard beaters. For orchard heritors which may have tho nroa of tho burning uurfneo In eroascd or diminished, ns Is tho ease with tho Hamilton reservoir heritor, tho burning la'o may bo kopt constant by adjusting tho nlldltig cover. It may ulso he incroriKod or decreased nt any tlmo during tho burning period of tho fuel. In order to dotormino accurately tho burning rato or characteristic of each typo of pot, tho following method was adopted; A dollcato balance of tho dial typo such as wiih used to weigh tho oil and pots for the previous oxperimontH was employed. Tho orchard boater to bo tested was placed upon tho platform und Its weight noted. It was then filled to Its capacity with oil and lighted. Tha wolgbt of tho pot plus tho oil was noted hofoio lighting, and as tho oil continued to burn tho actual weight was tiiltou every ton minutes, until all tho oil was burned, or tho pot wont nut, Thoj difference between each aticcusslvo weight and tho previous weight guvoi the-quantity of oil burned In tho teu-mlnuto interval. In making tests of this kind the apparatus should bo plncod whoro fitful wind currents do not Intorforo with tho burning, If tho burning hi done during gusty woather, I It la notgd thnt Mia burning rato fluctuates .accordingly rjH do tho winds.!
