Was it a Square Deal? Ob Sumlny, December 31, nt lite Medford theater to a well filled house was riven nn entertainment by a Pro fessor Eddy, which had been widely advertised as n "spiritualistic demon stration." The purpose as advertised wis to show spirit power, and to prove tho same by mntcrialinlion and dcmatcrializalion. That- this would be done on the sqtinre tho public were doubly assured, and were informed thnt this man nbovc all other men had proven before the Uoynl Society of England to their entire satisfaction that his manifestations -were beyond human aid. and that "He courts the fullest investigation by n competent committco chosen from among the audience," and at the cntcrtainmeut in announcing his desire for a com mittee he stated thnt lip wished them to select competent men,, "lawyers, doctors, business meir of intelligence and integrity in whom the audience would have full confidence." Had ho advertised this simply as an entertainment, no fault would linve ' been found. As such it was very good. But no better than is being played every night under its true name. But it is not a square deal for him to fool the people, neither i it n square deal for a committee chosen from tho audience to get up there and assist him in fooling the people. But to advertise this as coming from tho "unseen world" and by at tempting to enshroud it in mystery is nn imposition upon the credulity of childhood, of which thero were a goodly number present. Childhood is entitled to fucts. And forolder heads to give credence to such frauds and fakes is only to reap n. harvest of ignorance and superstition. The very things hich hcicnce is endeavor ing to eradicate. It is high time this act should be made a serious crime and bo heavily penalized. If there is a verity to spiritualism it is being imposed upon and should busy itself in casting out all such im postors, and tho very fact that it docs not really looks suspicious. Of course, there is nothing super natural about his oorfonnuuee. He operated under three hends clair voyance, telepathy and black art. And ho never intended that his game would be on the square, ns will bo shown. As a member of that committee, when wo were examining that cala boose before tho audience, I asked him if we would he allowed to look insido while the performance was go ing on, well aware of course that wo would not but to put linn to the test. His reply was, "If you understood this performance you would not ask thnt question." 1 then linked him, "What do you expect to provo by this committee'" Ilia iuuwer wan, "Now, don't uk quotations and don't try to interfere with the entertainment," This showed it wuh all hush. 1 then determined to look inside the cabinet whilo tho monkey work was going on, which 1 did. His deception was iu trying to make tho nudionco believe thnt whilo he was tied up iu thai rope with many knots, that ho was power less to move, uinl Dial there being no possible way for anyono else to got in there, that the spirits must have done the performance. Ho labored hard before (ho nudi onco to convince them that it was not iiccCHMiry for a medium to move a muscle to perform thoso mysterios, But if he means to say that ho did not move a miiHolo when ho was in that sack nud then threw the bells mid pans nut over the top of tho cabinet and ino looking down over the top, then tho i'nols can only bo ex pressed by tho uso of a very smull and very ugly word. C. R. WIIISLER. THE FIELD AGAINST LA FOLLETTE. OENATOK LA FOLU2TT13 was ihwii n reiunrkrfblc reception in Ohio so enthusiastic were the crowds that the president of the United' States became alarmed and announced that he would follow the AVisconsinite in an effort to counteract the effects, of the lat tor's visit. Mr. Tuft is foolish to make this move, not only because such recognition makes La Follette a more formidable candidate, but because placid Mr. Taft, lacking wholly in magnetism, makes personally an unfavorable comparison with the vigorous La Follette. Slight attention was paid by the Associated Press to La Follette 's Ohio invasion. Such stand-pat papers as the Orcgoniau. which one day announces that La Fol lette is a joke and. the next day says that insurgents are all for "Roosevelt, finite ignored it. There' is little doubt but that it is "the field against La Follette. If Roosevelt's name can be used to defeat, him, it will be used. La Follette, however, is the man really feared, and his sole hope of nomination lies in his arousing such a demonstration in his favor that the pol iticians dare not court certain defeat by ignoring him. La Follette is probably the best equipped man now a candidate for the presidency. ITc is the father of ef fective railroad and corporation regulation and has solved in a State-wide way the problems now confronting the nation. He is a constructive statesman with a real remedy for the political ills that afflict us. Roosevelt, on the other hand, is a destroyer rather than a creator. lie more or less blindly whacks away at the evil that he sees, but in so doing attempts to remedy the result rather than 'the cause. Of the two, La Fol lette, rather than Roosevelt, is the man of the hour, and it is doubtful if even the great popularity of the latter could overcome the third term bugaboo. . A Test of Uy P. J. O'GAKA. Pathologist and Special Meteorological Obsorvcr U. S. Weather Dureau. (Continued from last Friday.) It will bo well to compnro tho rate of burning of tho Holton one-gallon with the Bolton two-gallon, both with and without soot arresters. This comparison Is very striking, and shows that the Holton two-gallon type without soot arrester will burn a gallon of oil In much less than one-half the tlmo required to burn a, gallon In tho one-gallon pot without soot arrester. When using arresters we find that the ratio of burning time Is practically the same, with the exception that tho, two-gallon heater loaves much less residue. We note, for Instance, thatthe one-gaUon typo with sookarrester left all tho way from 20 to 3t pcr'cent of unburued oil and residue, while the two-gallon heater per cent residue nnd unburned oil. more perfect In the two-gallon type, It was found that the rate of burning so much as in tho one-gallon type, when comparing the rates of burning at top and bottom. In the one-gallon type tho rating curvo bends rather rapidly, whilo In tho two-gallon type it is more nearly a straight line. With the soot arrester In place In both sizes of the pots, the burning area is far from being constant, since It decreases rapidly, due to tho accumula tion of soot. Tho soot may hang In long festoons from the arrester, and, besides, tbrow a great deal of It Into choking effect oh the flame in a very is not economical without tho arrester; that is to say.two gallons of fuel will last very little longer than three hours, providing ft is ono of tio lighter distillates. Even with crudo oil the burning tlmo of one gallon Is not reasonably lengthened. Wo will consider this matter again In dis cussing somo of the other types of pots, TAM.E 7.
