The republican national conunitteo overwhelmingly defeated (ho resolution favoring the popular nominal ion of presidents by snowing under the endorsement of the presidential primary by a vote of 44 to 7. The progressive fstetion in the national committee hardly made a showing. How could it, when a progres sive state like Oregon is represented by a reactionary like J Kalpli Williams? ( The republican organization is stand-nut to the core. Politicians of both parties unite in one things opposition ' to any legislation permitting tho people to rule. Lot the' politicians do the nominating and tluvy don't cav'u how the! people vote, for 'what choice, have the people, in choosing candidates for "president? President Tuft controls the national committee and intends to force his renominatiou. This is easily done. Through federal patronage the administration controls the republican delegates from the south. These with New York and Ohio and one or two other delegations are suf ficient to nominate. La Pollette might be nominated, if the people had a voice, but they probably won't have, except in the few' states where a presidential primarv governs. Still he um ! develop strength enough to show tho folly of renominat ing T aft, in which case Roosevelt might stampede the con vention but the cards are stacked for Taft and probable defeat. HARD UP FOR CRITICISM. Wnp HERE is more rejoicing in the columns of the -- Orcgonian over the one paroled or 'trusty' pris oner who is lost, no matter whether he is found or not. than over tho ninety and nine that went not astray." This remark by the Salem Journal hits the nail on the head. The Orcgonian is endeavoring, by every means in its power, to discredit Governor West and his administration. Tt speaks volumes for the executive that the only fault this blind partisan lifts been able to harp upon is West's humanitarian prison policy. Prison records for 1911 show abolition of cruelty, more liberty granted prisoners and fewer escapes than any pre vious year. v The story of the year shows many prisoners engaged iu useful work and making a profit for the state some thing unknown before. Contract labor, whereby the state gave private firms the use of. convicts and the profit of their labor, has been abolished by this administration. Cost of maintaining the state institutions, including the penitentiary, has been materially reduced. State property, such as the prison farm, the brick yards, the grounds of the various state institutions, has been improved and enlarged without additional cost to taxpayers, through the convicts. Miles of public highway have been constructed at nom inal cost through the loan to counties of prisoners, and no fresh outbreak of crime has followed. . Prisoners have been placed on their honor and sent to work without guard in the forest 300 miles from the peni tentiary, without violating their 2ledgcs, as on the Crater Lake highway. None of these things are Orcgonian. However if a poor weak-minded and foolish trusty breaks away there delectable contemporary, as censure upon the "failure" of A NEGLECTED SEVERAL carloads of eggs are shipped into Medford yearly. "Why? A few years ago eggs and poultry were exported. Now they are imported and the only excuse is that we have been so busy with apples and pears that we have over looked the humble hen. The Oregon Agricultural college issued a bulletin commending the Rogue river valley as one of nature's favorite regions for poultry. The Medford Commercial club issued a pamphlet, setting forth the valley's advan tages in this regard. Still but try business. There is a great opportunity calling for the poultry fancier here. All varieties of even Petaluma is better for for the turkey. Each place exports thousands of fowls find Petaluma millions of eggs.
