Hereafter upon all government and state maps, and oven-
upon all maps issued, this most symetrieal
and beautilul as weU as lot t.iost, oL southern Oregon
peaks will bo designated by its original and cor
rect name, in honor of Oregon's first developer.
Ml. MeLoughlin was Vhristened in 18M by Tom
MeKay, of tho Hudson Bay company, a son of Astor's
partner who came out to Astoria in 'the Tonquin a cen
tury ago. The peak was named after leather John
MeLoughlin, chief in the northwest of the Hudson I3ay
company and tho father of Oregon. Tom McKay from
1S30 to 183G made regular trips from the Columbia river
to Culil'oniia collect inir furs and pelts from the Indians
and lrom the eompauy's trappers, and on his first trip
was impressed by the beauty of the snow capped sentinel
ol the Cascades whieli lie christened in honor of his em
ployer. As Mt. MeLoughlin the peak was known to gold seek
ers, pioneers and early settlers. It was not until the sev
enties that it was labeled Mt. Pitt, although in John O.
Fremont's book, issued in the latter MOs. is a picture or the
mountain, under which is the label "iMount Pitt." Not a
word of explanation appeal's in the text, and no reference
is made to the peak anywhere in the book.
"When the Oregon and California railroad was pro
jected, in the 70s, two routes were offered the builders,
one the present one across the Siskiyous, the other, upon
the line of a survey made by Col. Jesse Apple-gate, "vuu
ning up one of the forks of the Umpqua, across the Ump
qua divide, up Big Butte and across the pass south of
ALr. AlcLoUglilin into the Klamath country and thence
into California down the Pitt river. This was called the
Pitt river route. Part of it is utilized by the Pacific &
Eastern.
Col. Applegate made a map of the country, labeling
Mt. MeLoughlin as Mt. Pitt, to identify it in the public
mind with the Pitt river route, which he was promoting.
This map of a country but little known was copied by
government and other map makers, hence the name Pitt
became fastened upon it. Other and later maps labeled
it Diamond peak, showing a confusion in the minds of the
earl' map makers.
The Oregon State Geographic board made aji exhaus
tive inquiry into the merits of the respective nains of
this mountain. No foundation could be found for Pitt.
It is not even known what Pitt it was supposed to be
christened after. The National Geographic board once
decided that it was not named after Sir William Pitt, as
claimed, and ordered it spelt Pit. As a result of its inves
tigations the state board decided in favor of MeLoughlin.
R. G. Smith of Grants Pass, then a ..member of the
legislature, iti 1905 introduced a bill- which subseouentlv

passed, designating iit.fAicL.ougniin as the olneial name
of the mountain. Since then it has been so known in state
documents.
The matter was repeatedly called to the attention of
the chairman of the National Geographic board, but urob-
ably.in the principle that a lie well stuck to is better than
the truth, it was repeatedly pigeon-holed. Tardv action
has just been taken and hereafter Mt. MeLoughlin is in
official existence and Mt. Pitt among the myths.
To no one is the northwest more indebted than to
Father John MeLoughlin and it is eminently fitting that
one of our noblest mountains be called after an Oregon
hero rather than after some century dead foreigner who
never heard of Oregon.

we have had the Pacific coast extension of the Gould
roads, known as the Western Pacific, and the Pacific
extension of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul, known

branches of the rn'esent systems."'
JUicre can be no extensive development of a virgin
country without railroads. Given railroads and the peo

is developing Oregon by new railroads. There is ample
