t- 'S, ' I ' , PftGETWO '"' MEDFOltu ivfAIL TRTOUNE, MEDFORD, OKKOON, TUESDAY, 'AlTfltCT 22, 1011. THE PRINTERS1 STRIKE. THE MAIL TRIBUNE appears in a somewhat abbre viated form today, due to an unexpected, nnnec jjaiy, needless and absurd strike of its printers, who at a meeting held last night, voted to walk ott"t at 7:30 o'clock this morning unless the management renewed the agree ment with the tvpographiearunion for another year at once. "MHJtftfii - ' Tlio Mail Tribune has always boon a union shop. Its printers have always been paid the top vage. Altlroiigli the scale has been $3 a day for floor men and $1 a day for linotype operators, the wages paid were $3.50 and $.t.o0 a bonus of 50 cents per dav per man. Before the advent of the management there "wore no union printers in Med- lord and $12 per week was the average wage. The pay in the Mail Tribune office was above the union scale, eight horn's constituted a day's work, and a light aritl airy office was provided for the men. It deemed as though no cause could be trumped up for a strike or that the employes could better their condition by striking. 'A week ago the Mail Tribune took a temporary eon tract to print the Mcdford Sun for a mouth. Having su perior facilities and equipment idle a part of the day, it was supposed that it eould do the printing cheaper than the Sun itself could, by lifting duplicate advertisements, etc. This was the excuse for the strike. It the Mail Tri bunc and the Sun had been one institution or owned in common, the union would have had no complaint. Being entirely separate, and legitimate competitors, exchange of matter is prohibited under union rules. Therefore, the effort of both papers to print as large aiid as excellent a paper as possible, through cutting out ccononue waste, has been thwarted by the printers themselves, who in the long run would be the chiet beneficiaries. The local typographical Union, then, in spite of the fair treatment always accorded its members, in spite of the fact that the Mail Tribune paid the highest wages in the state outside of Portland, in spite of the fact that the paper was the first to recognize the union south of Salem, in spite of an tins ana lnucn more, snowed .tucir appreciation by or dering a strike upon practically no notice at all. Furthermore, the strike was one of the most absurd on record it was for a scale of wages half a dollar a day per man less than that alread paid.. The printers, it is needless to say, won their unneces sary strike, that is, the management signed the scale agree ment and ior three years will adhere to it stnctlv. The printers will receive just what the scale calls for and no more. Each striker succeeded in his effort to secure a $3 a week reduction in wages and is the recipient of con gratulations. , ixny nimplfltna of rlioumullsm Mncci lo sliiea lior Knenxi loilU la much Imnrov nt nml 1 do not hrttltato In Jmylni? GHER PRICES FOR BARTLETTS Recent Low Prices Have Materially Inereased Consumption and This Will Tend to Force Prices Up With Better Quality Arriving. Sgobcl & Day of New York, under date of August 16, say: Sixty-three cars sold Monday, 35 Tuesday and 44 today, Wednesday, certainly show heavy receipts. Bartletts 31000 boxes out of the above sold and we arc glad to report a little higher market, more espec ially on tho better quality of many of the pears now coming In from points outsido of Sulsun and tho riv er. Today the best Bartletts of 135 to 1G5 sizes aro in good demand at J1.S0 to $2.20, others of lower grade and irregular packing and some well colered up sold $1,45 to IJ.7G. The low prices lately have materially In creased the consumption and as wo must cxpoct better quality pears wc believe next week will shqw a dif ferent etnto of things. This market, according to reports, continues above other markets In prices. Peaches Immense arrivals con tlnue, 41,700 boxes sold since Mon day ,and Elbortas made 75c to $1.00, apd Crawfords, Susquehannas. etc., 7Dc .to 90c. Soiuo of the latter va rjytljcs.aro getting a better color. On tho expected lighter arrivals we shall see better prices on peaches, but they certainly have been hurting this mar ket lately for all other fruits. Grapes About 7000 Malagas and 9400 Thompson Seedless sold since Monday, tho former doing very well, were prlmo In every way and sold $1.75 to $2.00 on clusters and $1.50 to $1.75 on ordinary, but somo dull looking and soft sold around $1.10. The Thompsons sold mostly from SOc to $1.10 and they aro not going well, buyers'' complaining of their small size. If Malagas drop to $1.50 Thompsons will go to 75c First three days of this week 142 cars have been sold against last year precisely the same number. In Jcr soy City today waiting are 65 cars, while due tomorrow and Friday 41 cars more. It is said the arrivals next week will be lighter and If so we hope for higher prices, especially on Bartletts, tho consumption of which Is very heavy Indeed. Glad to hear that the first cars of Italians have started from the northwest and If good they will do well. SMITH'S.
